QIDDIYA CITY, Saudi Arabia — Less than an hour southwest of Riyadh, Qiddiya City has emerged as a tourist destination focused on entertainment, sports and the arts scene. The complex, located in the Tuwaiq Mountains, is part of Saudi Vision 2030, an initiative to create partnerships that contribute to economic development. One of its primary tenants — Six Flags Qiddiya City — opened its gates on New Year’s Eve, sparking worldwide attention as 2026 started.
“There was a lot of anticipation leading up to opening day, and guests arrived with big expectations,” said Ahmad Alfaiz, public relations. “What truly stood out to us was just how strong the appetite for thrill is in Saudi Arabia. From the moment the gates opened, guests were drawn instantly to the major rides, eager to push limits and experience something bold and new. The energy, the confidence and the enthusiasm confirmed what we believed all along — this audience is ready for world-class, record-breaking experiences.”
Opening night was given dramatic flair with a high-spectacle production crafted by Freckled Sky.
While the Six Flags brand has continued to grow and evolve over the decades, the Qiddiya City park is the first Six Flags to be built from the ground up since the early 1970s and the first to be built outside North America.
“The energy on opening day was electric. You could feel it the moment guests arrived: excitement, curiosity and a real sense of pride, Alfaiz told Amusement Today. “This theme park has been years in the making, and seeing it finally come to life with families, friends and thrill-seekers experiencing it together was incredibly powerful. It wasn’t just an opening; it felt like a celebration of play, ambition and what Six Flags Qiddiya City represents for Saudi Arabia.”
This massive project was announced prior to the global pandemic in 2020. Even then, the plans seemed so ambitious, so grandiose that the amusement industry and public alike questioned if it could become a reality. The COVID crisis only heightened those uncertainties.
Once construction kicked into high gear, the reality of the park looked much more optimistic, and the record-setting rides kept everyone watching. Finally, after years in development, guests can experience what the park has to offer.
The trailblazing new park blends immersive entertainment with innovative technology across its six themed lands: City of Thrills, Discovery Springs, Steam Town, Twilight Gardens, Valley of Fortune and Grand Exposition. They surround the central Citadel.
Capturing the planet’s attention is the new record-setter for the tallest, longest and fastest roller coaster in the world. Falcons Flight makes use of the rugged cliffs surrounding the park and boasts a length of 13,943 feet, 155 mph and a height of 534 feet (with an elevation change of 640 feet). It not only breaks records, it shatters them. It almost doubles the length of North America’s longest roller coaster.
Falcons Flight was built by Intamin. The manufacturer supplied three attractions at the park.
“It was an incredible journey. From day one, we felt that we were creating something special, not just another attraction,” said Gerard Slenders, vice president, Intamin. “Falcons Flight is special because of the Saudi Vision 2030 behind it, and turning the most ambitious ideas into reality, even in very demanding environments.”
The coaster has the ability to operate with six trains. Because of its intense speed, each car has a windshield. Each train seats 16.
Its layout outlines almost half the park and well beyond.
“Being involved early allowed us to shape the concept together with the client and build strong trust along the way,” Slenders told AT. “Seeing that process result in a record-breaking attraction is hugely rewarding and demonstrates how visionary ideas can be turned into world-class experiences.”
Building such a coaster would be exceptionally challenging in any environment, but the climate and topography made this staggering attraction quite the accomplishment.
“Given the length, height and speed, every detail matters, from structural forces and ride dynamics to materials suitable for the harsh environment,” Slenders noted. “Operational requirements like windshields to avoid goggles, extreme temperatures and environmental conditions added layers of complexity, including the wheel load distribution and the cooling of the wheels.”
The second coaster from Intamin is no slouch either. Standing at 239 feet, the upside-down inversion takes the record for world’s tallest. A multi-pass launch speeds riders to 79 mph, allowing them to tackle the record-setting element.
One of the park’s more scenic (and calm) rides is Intamin’s Flying Island, offering spectacular views.
Not everything is about pulse-pounding thrills however. Six Flags Qiddiya City offers a wide range of attractions from family rides to water rides and children’s offerings. Zamperla provided an impressive nine rides.
“Together, these attractions form a cohesive mix of family and family-thrill flat rides, reinforcing Zamperla’s long-standing commitment to inclusive entertainment — where different age groups can share memorable experiences within the same destination,” said Nadia Panato, marketing manager, Zamperla. “In addition to ride dynamics, a key focus of the project has been theming and visual storytelling.”
“We are incredibly proud of our collaboration with Six Flags Qiddiya City, a project that will truly reshape the entertainment landscape in Saudi Arabia. Contributing nine rides reflects Zamperla’s long-standing commitment to creating fun experiences for everyone, across generations,” added Antonio Zamperla, president and CEO. “For us, rides must be beautiful, immersive, and emotionally engaging — not just exciting. Our ability to decorate and theme attractions has defined Zamperla’s identity for nearly 60 years, and this project is a perfect expression of that heritage.”
Zamperla additions include a Giga Discovery pendulum, Neublaz, Watermania and a rare Big Wavez splash attraction. Other family flat rides provide a range of thrills.
Vekoma supplied three of the park’s eight coasters.
“Delivering world-class attractions like Iron Rattler, Adrena-Line and Twilight Express for such a visionary and unique destination is something we’re truly proud of,” said Carin Davits, marketing, Vekoma. “The attractions selected by Six Flags are a perfect combo. Each ride showcases a different strength of our design and engineering capabilities. Iron Rattler delivers intense thrills with dynamic elements, Adrena-Line offers a unique and high-adrenaline experience that pushes boundaries when it comes to family thrills, and Twilight Express combines immersive storytelling with smooth, family-friendly excitement. Together, these rides reflect our commitment to creating experiences for every guest profile, from thrill seekers to families, while maintaining our core values of innovation, reliability, and world-class design.”
Iron Rattler is the world’s tallest tilt coaster.
“Its uniqueness goes far beyond height,” Davits said. “What truly sets it apart is the seamless integration of cutting-edge tilt technology with a bold, dynamic layout that delivers an unmatched thrill experience. The tilt feature creates an extraordinary moment of suspense before the plunge, amplifying anticipation and adrenaline for every rider. Complemented by intricately themed trains equipped with onboard entertainment, Iron Rattler keeps guests engaged from start to finish. The trains’ integrated LED lighting is the perfect solution for evening operations, enhancing visibility, atmosphere and narrative impact when the park is at its most dramatic after dark.”
Among the lineup of eight coasters is a lone wooden coaster from Great Coasters International Inc. Its structure and aesthetic make it a draw, not to mention the distinctive roar. Standing at 95 feet and just under 3,000 feet in length, Colossus has opened to rave reviews from coaster fans who have visited.
“We are very ecstatic that this project has finally opened, especially because this is our ‘first’ very dynamic ride,” said Clair Hain Jr., president, GCII. “Having it open in the Middle East is wonderful.”
Colossus can operate with three trains, each seating 20. The layout was created by Skyline Attractions.
“Looking at the coaster, nothing seems different until you get on the ride,” Hain told AT. “The ride experience is phenomenal and very dynamic. On my first ride, I was actually scared — we had never done a ride like this, and I never experienced one of our rides with this amount of G’s! They wanted a white-knuckle, high-G, dynamic ride, and we delivered what they requested.”
Water rides also enter the ride arsenal. Zamperla supplied two. In addition, one of the park’s biggest family rides is a flume from WhiteWater. It’s called Zoomaflooma.
“Making a splash in the middle of the desert didn’t seem possible five years ago when we started this journey. We were incredibly proud to receive our first riders on opening night, bringing fast rivers, splashes and smiles to the heart of this incredible park,” said Kelly Sall, general manager – water rides, WhiteWater. “We were trusted to deliver boats that were highly textured with a reed theme to augment the story, and we feel we delivered with vehicles that fit the land and narrative perfectly. Zoomaflooma is a river adventure unlike any other, and we can’t wait for the rest of the world to discover its secrets.”
Nearby is a Spike Coaster from Maurer Rides. Called the Sea Stallion, two-seater vehicles put the speed control in the hands of the rider. Eight vehicles are installed on the ride. It has a height of 39 feet, a length of 1,673 feet and a top speed of 44 mph.
“In a destination defined by record-breaking attractions and bold superlatives, Sea Stallion proves that true impact is not measured in height or speed, but in shared joy,” said Torsten Schmidt, director of business development, Maurer. “As an interactive family coaster seamlessly integrated into the log flume, it delights guests with its playful twists and turns, while its stunning evening illumination transforms the ride into a magical experience, making it uniquely memorable within Qiddiya City’s extraordinary portfolio.”
Mack Rides supplied another water ride, Saw Mill Falls, a water coaster.
“Being part of Qiddiya is incredibly inspiring for us,” said Maximilian Roeser, marketing, Mack Rides. “It’s a destination that dares to dream big and we’re proud that our rides help bring that vision to life.”
Part boat ride, part coaster, the journey is accented by factory theming, audio within the landscaping and rocky scenery.
Aiding in providing family entertainment in ever-changing climate conditions, two dark ride experiences offer indoor fun.
Enchanted Greenhouse is a joint venture between JoraVision, Lagotronics and ETF. While many interactive dark rides have passengers engage with the storyline by “shooting,” this clever concept has riders using watering nozzles to cause the scenery and animatronics to grow and react.
Into the Deep is an interactive dark ride supplied by Triotech.
While family rides are lower to the ground, the thrill seekers can’t miss the towering rides. One of the tallest attractions is Sirocco Tower, standing 475 feet tall. Built by S&S Worldwide, the monumental structure is unmissable. Interestingly, the design of the tower is unique to Qiddiya City, as the ride vehicle seats eight people on each side of the tower.
“We are incredibly proud to be one of the five world records at Six Flags Qiddiya,” said Jason Mons, CEO, S&S. “When Stan Checketts created the first tower 32 years ago, few could have imagined this outcome. We are deeply grateful to Six Flags and Qiddiya for trusting us with the opportunity to create the world’s first Strato-Tower, something so bold and iconic that it will be enjoyed by park guests for decades to come. This project represents what’s possible when visionary partners challenge themselves to dream big.”
Various play areas and other family fare from Moser, P&B and Bouygues Bâtiment International ensure that there are experiences for everyone, no matter the age. With 18 rides specially designed for families and younger guests, there is much to balance the massive rides dominating the skyline.
“While our record-breaking rides have captured a lot of attention, and rightly so, Six Flags Qiddiya City was designed to be a full-day, multi-generational experience,” Alfaiz told AT. “There’s something for everyone. You don’t have to be a thrill-seeker to have an unforgettable day here.”
Adult ticket prices start from $85 USD, children’s ticket prices start from $70 USD, and kids under the age of 4 enjoy free admission.
“My favorite part is watching those unscripted moments; someone stepping off a ride still laughing, kids discovering an attraction for the first time, families pausing to take it all in. You see joy in its purest form,” Alfaiz said. “That’s when you realize why we built this theme park: to create shared memories, spark emotion and remind people of the power of play.”
