Carowinds expands Camp Snoopy with coaster, interactive water ride

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Known for high thrill rides like Fury 325, Copperhead Strike and Thunder Striker, Carowinds has made a name for itself as an adrenaline junkies paradise. However, that is not all the park is known for. Home to Camp Snoopy, Carowinds has become a destination throughout the region for families of all ages, with rides for everyone. In 2025, the park continued to build upon its family draw with a two-ride expansion for Camp Snoopy. Snoopy’s Racing Railway and Charlie Brown’s River Raft ride bring more family fun to the park than ever before. Marking the largest family-focused investment in park history, the rides blend classic Peanuts charm with modern ride technology.

“This year we went bigger, better and Snoopy-er,” laughed Chris Foshee, Carowinds communications manager. “We added Snoopy’s Racing Railway, a family launch coaster, and Charlie Brown’s River Raft Blast, a river raft battle adventure.” Home to 13 roller coasters, prior to the addition of Snoopy’s Racing Railway, only three of them were family-oriented. “We really needed another family coaster,” remarked Foshee, “Snoopy’s Racing Railway fits that perfectly. It’s a good introduction coaster that all ages can enjoy.”

The newest coaster invites guests on a mission to deliver pizza and root beer to Camp Snoopy’s mess hall. After launching out of the station, the train makes a sweeping right-hand turn and dips down, passing through the campy supply shed. The locomotive-themed train then twists and turns before entering the mess hall, where riders experience a second launch. Riders accelerate to 31 miles per hour, pass by Woodstock and his pals, rise out of the mess hall, and wind back to the station. But the excitement isn’t over — riders are launched through the station again, repeating the ride’s sequence for a second thrilling lap before finally returning to the station.

When comparing Snoopy’s Racing Railway to Carowinds’ other family-oriented coasters, such as Woodstock Express and Flying Ace Aerial Chase, it offers a unique experience. “It’s newer, it’s smoother, and it’s a safer introduction to coasters,” said Foshee. “A kid may be a little rattled whenever he gets on his first wooden roller coaster because maybe they didn’t expect the jerk. This thing [Snoopy’s Racing Railway] is as smooth as glass. It’s the perfect introduction to coasters because it exposes and introduces them to the thrills, without being overbearing and spooking them with a big drop or something like that.”

The park’s efforts toward inclusive family fun are reflected not just in ride concepts but in the concept as well. Designed by Germany-based ART Engineering, Snoopy’s Racing Railway was built from the start to be fun and accessible. “It’s a ride for the small kids but [also] for the whole family,” explains Georg Behringer, manager and co-owner of ART Engineering. The trains and restraint system are designed to accommodate guests as short as 36 inches without a booster seat.” Guests of any age can be comfortable in the train, a testament to the thoughtful design of the train and the family-oriented nature of the attraction.

Meanwhile, across the midway, Carowinds introduced a very different experience in Charlie Brown’s River Raft Blast. The ride is an interactive boat ride from Mack Rides. Riders head on down to Snoopy’s swimming hole and hop on one of his log rafts. Each raft is outfitted with water guns for a drenching good time. But the fun doesn’t stop there! There are more water guns placed on the midway, so guests can interact with riders and have a chance to catch a break from the Carolina heat and participate in the fun.

“Being in the South, it gets hot,” remarked Foshee on a humid fall evening at the park. “We are always listening to our customers, seeing what they want, and they do want more ways to cool off with more water-based attractions. What a perfect fit. People’s response to that has been amazing. Just a lot of contagious laughter on this side of the park.”

The ride most definitely sets a super fun tone for the area. Guests of all ages have enjoyed splashing each other on the hot summer days. Everywhere you look, there are smiles on people’s faces. The idea of incorporating water guns adds to the sense of nostalgia that Camp Snoopy brings.

“There’s just something fun about the water gun aspect of things, right?” stated Tim Viox of Leisure Labs, Mack’s North American sales representative. “I mean, we played as kids with water guns. That was one of the first toys that we were given. There’s something just playful that takes adults back to their childhood.”

The additions in 2025 show just how much Carowinds is leaning into its family audience. “Charlotte is a growing market with lots of young families,” said Foshee. “It’s really an opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to a new crowd. When you start visiting the park at a young age, you build a connection, and it becomes a tradition. That’s exactly what we’re trying to do with Camp Snoopy, and so far, we’ve been really happy with how it’s been received.”

That excitement has carried over to the park’s regulars as well. “Our passholders have definitely responded,” he added. “We’ve seen growth in season passes, especially among families with young kids. Camp Snoopy has been jumping all season.”

Between a smooth, dual-launch family coaster, a water ride built for laughs, and plenty of new ways to play, Camp Snoopy has quickly become a spot for the whole family to enjoy together. Foshee said that’s exactly the goal — to build connections that last. “When you start visiting the park when you’re little, you build a bond,” he said. “Those memories stick with you.”

Outside of Camp Snoopy, Carowinds also gave some extra attention to the rest of the park. Boo Blasters on Boo Hill got a full refresh, complete with new blasters and updated effects. The park also added Charlotte’s first adult-only swim-up bar, which has been a surprise hit.

“We went heavy on the kids’ side this year, so we wanted to balance that out,” Foshee said. “That addition has been a big success.”

The park’s new executive chef has also stepped up Carowinds’ food game, bringing fresh ideas and more variety across the board. From the rides to the food, it’s been a year full of improvements that reach every corner of the park.

Still, the heart of it all comes back to Camp Snoopy. With two new attractions, more places to cool off, and that familiar Peanuts charm, Carowinds has built a space that keeps families coming back year after year, forging traditions and memories that span generations. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most lasting thrills aren’t measured in height or speed, but in smiles shared along the way.

ORLANDO — Every year, when the third weekend in November rolls around, the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) creates a lot of sound across Central Florida. This year will be no exception as the IAAPA Expo continues to evolve, expand, and continue to emerge as the most influential event for the industry.

IAAPA Expo 2025 is to take place November 17-21, at the Orange County Convention Center, Orlando, Florida. The trade show is at capacity with more than 1,100 exhibitors. A waitlist for exhibit space continued to grow as the dates approached.

The educational portion of the event takes place November 17-20, with the trade show open November 18-21.

The comprehensive education conference will offer more than 170 educational sessions led by industry experts across diverse career tracks, covering critical topics such as guest experience, safety, artificial intelligence, sustainability, crisis communication, operational excellence, and the all-new track featuring natural and adventure attractions.

There are at least 10 formal networking receptions and countless opportunities to collaborate. But attendees and exhibitors have multiple outlets and opportunities to congregate with each other.

This year’s event will, once again, span both the North and South Concourses of the convention center. And due to this year’s record demand, IAAPA officials have already announced that the show will expand into the West Concourse for 2026.

And, of course, officials are expecting tens of thousands of attendees from all parts of the industry, including theme parks and family entertainment centers, to museums, aquariums, water parks and suppliers.

“IAAPA Expo continues to evolve and expand, reflecting the strength and innovation of our industry,” said Jakob Wahl, president and CEO of IAAPA.

Among the highlights expected this year include: Legends, A Hall of Fame Celebratory Affair, where five more industry legends will be formally inducted; the Leadership Breakfast featuring Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations and Experiences; IAAPA Celebrates, a special event for IAAPA members to experience exclusive access to Universal Epic Universe, with food and beverage, live entertainment and character meet-and-greets across Universal’s newest theme park; Women in the Industry Lunch, featuring Lauren Hodges, Ed.D., expert in human performance sciences and owner of Performance on Purpose; Industry EDUTours, where members can go behind the scenes at some of Central Florida’s attractions; Haunting Grounds, a special zone featuring exhibitors that specialize in Halloween attractions and experiences and Legends of Epic Panel, moderated and curated by Bob Rogers, founder and chairman of BRC Imagination Arts.

Although officially beginning on Monday, November 17, events begin kicking off on Saturday, November 15, with the multi-day IAAPA Rookies FEC 101, which gives insights into the FEC industry.

The multi-day Institute for Professionals begins the next day, Sunday, November 16. Water Park Day is a day-long program on this day as well.

Also on Sunday is the 22nd Annual International Charity Golf Tournament, as well as two EDUTours, Inside Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Sea and Fun Spot America in Orlando. Other EDUTours are scheduled throughout the week.

Other special events throughout the week include Zoos and Aquariums Reception, IAAPA First Time Welcome Event, industry luncheons, the IAAPA Expo Opening Ceremony, an all-new Drone Show by Sky Elements, Carnival and Showmen’s Reception, a new Natural Attractions Reception, Europe, Middle East and Africa Reception.

The educational programming this year is enormous, touching on every aspect of the entertainment industry. From AI to food trends to marketing to crisis management to operations to finding talent, it is doubtful that the IAAPA Expo planners have left anything out.

“We’ve built a program that’s relevant, forward-thinking and grounded in real-world experience,” said Michael Shelton, chief operating officer and executive vice president. “Our sessions feature leaders from across the globe who are tackling today’s toughest challenges with creativity and clarity.”

Moments outlast innovation

Being a part of the amusement industry, it's very easy to get lost in the "What's new?" and the record-breaking, headline-grabbing of it all. That's especially true this time of year as we slip closer to the IAAPA Expo in Orlando, where the aisles are highlighted by the things we've not seen before, captivating our attention.

However, it's important not to lose sight that while our industry captures the media's attention with giant innovations, it captures our guests' hearts with lasting memories built on the simplest moments and smiles.

I've toured parks from coast to coast with family and friends. It's always been fun, always been loaded with highlights and always been a centerpiece to whatever trip we were on. Yet, I've come to realize that the memories we carry with us are so very seldom about riding a record-breaking coaster or what the new, high-tech things were. The memories come in the moments.

I had dinner with my kids the other night, and we laughed about the girls (who are now in their 20s) jumping in fear from a simple giant alligator hand puppet during Cedar Point's Halloweekends years ago. One of my oldest friends and I constantly tell the story of riding the old, wooden coaster at a local park while we were young and loving the way it used to beat us up while we laughed our heads off. Just this year, we spent an evening at a haunted theme park ... only to have not one scare, not one ground-breaking effect, not one new addition to that park be the memory that stands out from that night. It was dancing in front of the park's central stage as the band sound-checked and the guitarist played a few songs solo for those waiting.

Even as a child, I recall being excited to visit Dorney Park and ride a full-sized Telecombat ride from Zamperla (a promoted ride that was unveiled at that year's IAAPA Expo), on the cutting edge of interactivity and high-tech. Yet, to be honest, I don't carry memories of that ride. I carry the joyful memories of riding and playing Tank Tag — an upcharge attraction that had us driving in a courtyard and firing racquetballs at other "tanks" — with my father.

High-tech and record-breaking may dominate the headlines. But fun, family, smiles and simple moments dominate guests' memories ... and last a lifetime.

2025 IAAPA Hall of Fame inductees

ORLANDO — Five theme park industry legends will be formally inducted into the IAAPA’s Hall of Fame during this year’s IAAPA Legends: A Hall of Fame Celebratory Affair on Monday, Nov. 17, at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The event is held during IAAPA Expo.

IAAPA’s recognition places them among the most respected and influential leaders in the attractions industry, honoring their lasting impact and innovation.

This year’s Hall of Fame inductees are as follows:

Keith James, a 50-year-veteran in the themed entertainment industry, who began his career early on with Taft Broadcasting and Kings Entertainment before joining Universal Studios Orlando in various production roles. James then went on to manage Jack Rouse Associates’ (JRA, now RWS Global) design and production work for nearly three decades.

Gerardo Arteaga Oehninger is the person behind Fantasilandia in Chile and the Happyland family entertainment center chain. During his lifetime, Arteaga helped shape the attractions landscape across Latin America and beyond. For nearly 50 years, Arteaga introduced millions of guests to safe, innovative and high-quality entertainment experiences.

Dolly Parton, who partnered with Herschend Family Entertainment in 1986 to bring Dollywood to life, has become the luminary behind one of America’s most beloved theme parks. Her passion, investment and commitment to her Smoky Mountain roots have helped Dollywood more than double in size, now welcoming millions of guests each year.

Gary S. Wachs, a visionary leader in the attractions industry, was instrumental in shaping some of North America’s most iconic parks. From overseeing the development and opening of Kings Island, Kings Dominion and Canada’s Wonderland, to leading acquisitions of Carowinds and Marineland, his vision helped transform regional parks into major attraction destinations.

Su Zhigang, founder and chairman of Chimelong Group, has redefined the scale and ambition of attractions in Asia, with influence reaching audiences around the world. Under his leadership, Chimelong has become one of the most visited resort destinations globally, welcoming more than 36 million guests each year. From Chimelong Safari Park and Chimelong Water Park to the award-winning Chimelong Ocean Kingdom and its landmark marine resort in Zhuhai, his vision has seamlessly blended conservation, innovation and entertainment.

The selections were made by the IAAPA Hall of Fame Award Judging Task Force. This distinguished group is composed of five past global chairmen and IAAPA’s four current regional chairmen. Collectively, they carefully reviewed this year’s nominations and made the final selections.

Six Flags Over Texas to debut world’s largest B&M dive coaster

ARLINGTON, Texas — The rumblings have stirred since Six Flags announced long-range plans in 2024. At that time, it was stated that Six Flags Over Texas would debut a record-breaking dive coaster in 2026. This fall, the park dropped the gate on all those records with the announcement of Tormenta Rampaging Run.

Manufactured by Bolliger & Mabillard (B&M), the structure is rising quickly at the Arlington park. When complete, it will have numerous records, of which the park is touting six. Tormenta will be the tallest (309 feet) dive coaster on the planet; it will feature the world’s longest beyond-vertical drop at 285 feet at 95 degrees; the first two inversions will be the largest of their kind: Immelmann (218 feet) and vertical loop (179 feet); the coaster will set records for speed (87 mph) and length (4,199 feet) for a dive coaster.

“The Six Flags design team approached B&M, and they wanted to create a fun and exciting dive coaster experience, however, they wanted to push the envelope a little bit,” said Jonathan Smith, representative of B&M. “They asked, ‘Can you create a dive coaster that exceeds 300 feet?’ It essentially brings in a new ride category: a giga dive coaster. We reviewed with our engineering team and came up with a solution that would work really well for that product. We wanted to make sure it wasn’t too intense and keep the rider height limit at 48 inches, which is what the restraint accommodates. It is great for the ridership demographic, which is family thrill where [family members] ride together and it brings ridership up.”

Smith pointed out a distinct difference for this coaster is the amount of time riders have at that 300-foot elevation.

“Here, we are going to have more than 15 seconds of ride duration at that elevation where you have the opportunity to look around at the landscape of Arlington,” Smith told Amusement Today.

Vice President and Park Manager Mark Boyer joined the Six Flags Over Texas team in late spring. When brought on board, the project was in place. “What an amazing opportunity to be a part of what we’re building here,” he said. “We’re bringing this park back to life, plus with this wonderful addition we are putting in this park, I was more than excited to be a part of that.”

The final element on the ride is a 147-degree, overbanked horseshoe turn.

“There are so many elements, but that first drop — it’s magnificent,” said Boyer. “It’s one of a kind and will set the tone for the whole ride.”

“When we designed the ride, we wanted something that would be iconic that would change the skyline of the park and Arlington and would resonate throughout the state of Texas,” said Jeffrey Siebert, regional general manager. “The name above the gate is Six Flags, which is synonymous with big, giant thrills. That’s exactly what Tormenta does; it pays tribute to the history and legacy of the park in exciting ways to reignite the spirit of what Six Flags Over Texas has stood for and stands for and now for the next generations to come.”

Spain was one of the six lands when the park opened in 1961, which was themed to the history of Texas.

“Spain is ground zero for reigniting storytelling in the park,” Siebert told AT. “Spain will be a beautiful centerpiece of the nostalgia and history of Six Flags Over Texas.”

“We wrote a whole story for the land,” said Clayton Lawrence, corporate creative producer, Six Flags. “By creating that story, it helped us create cohesive and thoughtful design intent.”

That tale brings to life the fictional town of Tormenta, named for the storms (tormentas) that swept through the plains. Within the town, a legendary bull grew to be the most feared and respected animal owing to its fierce strength and incredible speed. The townsfolk named him Tormenta, and matadors from all over Spain came to challenge him, but none ever defeated him.

“It will be the day of their celebration of the annual running of the bulls event,” said Lawrence. “Flags and bunting and the decor will make you feel like you are in the middle of the festival celebration. We put the same amount of effort we put into the coaster into the land. Even nonriders can feel a part of the story.”

While the mammoth coaster will serve as the bold backdrop to the area — and the park! — the Spanish area will also receive a new look with a themed village and a new restaurant, Cocina Abuela. It is the first from-the-ground-up restaurant built in the park in the 21st century and will be the highest-capacity dining venue.

“We’ll reimagine [the current Mexican restaurant] Casa de las Banderas and keep the adult-beverage side,” said Boyer. “We won’t need the food as we will have the brand-new facility.”

The menu will feature Spanish and Latin cuisine. House-made tortillas will be made on site.

“Even if you don’t ride Tormenta, you should feel joy about being in the area,” said Siebert.

No specific opening date was announced, but construction is heavily underway.

“We’re really excited about it,” said Smith. “To have the first giga dive coaster here at Six Flags Over Texas with its history here and to be a part of its 65th anniversary in 2026, we’re proud to partner with them.”

Dollywood's groundbreaking announcement: NightFlight Expedition

Mack Rides to supply the park's largest investment

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — “We started with a story,” said Eugene Naughton, president, The Dollywood Companies.

And while that might not appear too unusual to hear a theme park operator say, it is. Typically, park management will seek out an attraction and then decide upon a theme overlay to elevate it. Dollywood turned this idea on its head. Management wanted to tell a story, and they challenged ride manufacturers to present an attraction to do so.

Mack Rides had the winning proposal.

“Dollywood’s brief was clear: they wanted an adventure, not just a ride,” said Maximilian Roeser, marketing, Mack Rides. “Our concept won the pitch, and it was an incredibly fun process to bring it to life. We asked ourselves: ‘How do you turn a nighttime expedition into a multi-sensory journey?’ The result is a narrative that unfolds through movement, music and visual storytelling. One of our favorite moments is the sudden shift from calm exploration to thrilling escape — it’s a perfect example of how story and ride dynamics can work hand in hand.”

The new attraction is called NightFlight Expedition.

“Mack’s Rocking Boat ride system allows us to take our guests on an immersive adventure through the Great Smoky Mountains in a way that no other current attractions can do,” Naughton said. “With the technology, our guests are going to feel like they’re flying above the Smokies, then taking a whitewater rafting adventure in the heart of the mountains, followed by a quick drive up a mountain peak with a gorgeous vista view, before splashing down into a mountain lake. Those are four unique experiences that guests in the Smokies can experience every day, and Mack’s system gives us the freedom to offer all of them in one attraction. Mack’s proposal made perfect sense for the engaging Smoky Mountain story that only Dollywood can tell.”

NightFlight Expedition is a truly unique ride system,” added Roeser. “Combining water ride elements, coaster dynamics and immersive dark ride storytelling presents a complex set of challenges. At Mack Rides, we’ve developed a modular control architecture that allows for seamless transitions between different ride modes — both mechanically and narratively.
The key is synchronizing motion, effects and story beats in a way that feels natural to the guest. Our engineering and creative teams worked closely with Dollywood to ensure that each phase of the experience flows intuitively.”

According to Naughton, the park began planning this new endeavor just mere weeks after opening the award-winning Big Bear Mountain in the Wildwood Grove section in 2023. This new project will be located right behind that coaster.

With Dolly Parton’s name above the door, it was no surprise to see her embrace the ride.

“Dolly says that the Smokies are the most beautiful place she’s ever seen, and she’s proud to have grown up here in the mountains,” said Pete Owens, vice president, marketing. “She’s passionate about sharing her love for her home in everything she does — from songwriting to what we do here at Dollywood — so she is very excited about the storyline of NightFlight Expedition. She said that a lot of people ask her about her favorite time of year in the Smokies, but no one really asks about her favorite time of day in the Smokies. She’s even more excited because this story takes place at night, the time when she feels the Smokies truly come to life because of all the creatures found within the mountains.”

“Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most biodiverse park within the U.S. National Park system with more than 19,000 species documented to date,” explained Naughton. “Scientists believe there could be up to 100,000 more undocumented species living in the mountains. A number of these species are bioluminescent or biofluorescent, meaning they produce light or glow at night. The park is most known for its synchronous fireflies, but there are so many other unique species including Appalachian Glowworms, the southern gray-cheeked salamander, and bioluminescent fungi called foxfire that all contribute to this fascinating phenomenon.”

This sets the stage for the ride experience. Two new characters are being introduced. Cora and Jasper are the niece and nephew of Wildwood Grove’s resident wilderness explorer, Ned Oakley. The twins, who work out of a hangar at Hidden Hollow Aviation, have invented the Bioluminator, a device designed to detect and amplify bioluminescence, the biochemical emission of light by living organisms. Cora and Jasper mount the device onto their family’s one-of-a-kind amphibious aircraft to illuminate the Wildwood Tree’s glowing roots and follow them to Secret Lake.

From there, guests will have a flying experience, boating experience, coaster experience and whitewater rapids experience, all without leaving the vehicle.

“We believe NightFlight Expedition will be an immersive experience with varying elements that everyone will enjoy,” Owens told Amusement Today. “NightFlight Expedition is a generational attraction that will be a key component of the Dollywood experience for decades to come. There is a little bit of mystery surrounding the Smokies and the natural bioluminescence that happens there, so tying that so naturally to our own Wildwood Grove story just made sense. You have this immersive story which pairs nicely with a very innovative ride system, allowing us to truly take guests on an adventure like they’ve never experienced before.”

Riders only have to be 39 inches tall to ride.

“We are a nationally recognized vacation destination, and we have a focus on providing families with a welcoming atmosphere where every member of the family can participate together,” Naughton said. “Our ride manufacturer partners have done an amazing job in helping us develop thrilling rides that feature a 39-inch height requirement so that younger members of the family can go along on the adventure. Because of this, many kids can say their first ‘real’ roller coaster ride happened at Dollywood, and that is an important memory that we want to help create for families.”

The entire ride experience takes place in a 44,000-square-foot airplane hangar. Visitors entering Hidden Hollow Aviation will soon embark on the grand adventure on various levels within the building.

“The bonus of an indoor attraction is that it can operate independently of the weather,” Owens said. “The beauty of the Smokies is unmatched, but NightFlight Expedition will allow our guests to have an adventure regardless of what is happening outside.”

Construction is well underway, and the attraction is set to open next spring.

“Storytelling is key to the Dollywood experience, and NightFlight Expedition provides us the opportunity to dive even deeper into the Wildwood Grove story. The ride is truly the ultimate canvas to create an immersive environment that allows us to take our storytelling to another level,” said Owens.

At 100 years old, Lake Winnie still family-owned, built on legacy

ROSSVILLE, Ga. — When asked what she attributed the 100-year success of her family’s park, Lake Winnepesaukah (more commonly known as Lake Winnie), Tennyson Dickinson is quick to answer.

“I will just say, over 70 of those 100 years, the park was run by female members of the family,” Dickinson said. “When my great-grandfather (Carl Dixon) died, my grandmother (Minette Dixon) took over. Remember, that was a time when women weren’t much in the workforce. Women couldn’t sign a check without their husbands.”

But ran Lake Winnie she did.

Then, upon her death, management went to Dickinson’s grandmother, Evelyn Dixon White (Minette Dixon’s daughter). That was in 1958. Dickinson said she has recently discovered that her grandmother was the first woman to ever chair an International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) committee

After Evelyn Dixon White’s death, Dickinson’s mother, Adrienne W. Rhodes, took over.

Her mother is still living, but the management of the park has now been turned over to Dickinson. Her sister, Adrienne Talley Rhodes Green, who was also active in the park's management, passed away in 2024.

“I appreciate the fortitude and determination and the sense of common sense all of these women possessed,” she said. “Our family has kept the park going with a delightful guest base. In a changing world, this is a very safe place to come.”

She said Lake Winnie is a family park.

“We desire to have something for the entire family,” she said. “The community has really supported us, and we, in turn, support our community.”

Dickinson said they held a formal 100th celebration at the park on June 17. Many friends and politicians were invited to come, and they did. They had a local DJ there, along with funnel cakes, jokes and funny stories.

“It was a very fun one-hour celebration,” she said.

Along with the celebration, the park created a 100th logo and merchandise such as cups and tins. The cups were printed with a collage of all the logos and graphics the park has used over the years.

And, along with all of that, Dickinson wrote a book about the history, Lake Winnepesaukah Amusement Park, which is on sale in the gift shop. She said she enjoyed writing it, but it was a tense situation since she began it last September, and it had to be at the publisher by December.

But she did it.

“We really worked hard, blending the past with the present,” Dickinson said. “We created a digital mosaic. We had the 100th logo in the middle and a ride on both sides of the logo. Then we invited customers to submit photos.”

They did this online. They were able to send them through a portal, and the photos then became the background of the image. The guests who submitted the photos were sent an email telling them where their photos were located.

“That was very popular,” she said.

Dickinson has many memories of growing up on the park grounds. One of her most fond memories happened when she was about five or six years old.

“My grandmother came and scooped me and my two older cousins up and brought us down into the park,” she said. “We didn’t have a carousel at the time, but we had a merry-go-round. My grandmother presented us each with our own merry-go-round horse that we could paint. It was like a dream for us.”

Dickinson said her grandmother used their painted horses on the merry-go-round.

“That was very brave of her,” she said.

And Dickinson said she supposed when they sold that merry-go-round, those horses went with it.

Another memory she has from when she was even younger was a time she was walking with her grandmother through the park, and they came upon a large pile of popcorn.

“She told me I could sit on it,” she said. “So, I did, and she took pictures of me sitting in the pile. All you could see was the huge pile of popcorn and this little kid sitting in the middle.”

Her grandmother gave their popcorn vendor at the time, the photo, and he ended up using it in his advertising.

Dickinson said they didn’t add any new attractions this year for the centennial since they installed one last year, the Catch ’N Air. Instead, she said they worked on services and presentations to make the 100th year fun.

Business was good for the centennial year, but the weather didn’t cooperate at the beginning of the season.

“We were plagued with a lot of rain, especially in May and June,” she said. “I think we only had one full operating day during that time when there was no rain. But we have ended up very good. We are having a strong October with our Halloween event.”

The Halloween event started in 2010. They suspended it for two years during the COVID pandemic, reopening it again in 2022.

The park does plan to have a new ride for the 2026 season. Dickinson said they should receive it this fall, but wasn’t ready to release the information at the time of this story.

Lake Winnie has over 30 rides and attractions. There is also a five-acre Soakya water park, costume characters, and food and beverage locations.

But in the beginning, the focus was on the water. Carl and Minette Dixon purchased property that surrounded a lake. In 1925, they opened the park to guests for swimming, picnicking and boating. The next year, they built a swimming pool. It was removed later.

In 1929, Carl Dixon designed and build a mill chute ride called the Boat Chute, a ride that still operates at Lake Winnie. Over the years, the park added more rides, including the iconic John C. Allen Cannonball wooden roller coaster, built by Philadelphia Toboggan Co. that began operating in 1967.

Family flat ride Drifti delivers fast, furious smiles

TAMPERE, Finland — Bragging rights for a first-of-its-kind ride are often reserved for big, iconic thrill rides, but often those accolades are just as fun for rides geared toward the entire family.

Särkänniemi has installed the first Drifter ride from Zierer. Called Drifti at the park, the ride sports nine gondolas that seat two passengers each. Like the manufacturer’s popular Jet Skis ride, riders are in control activating a motion to “swing out,” or in this case drift. The previous ride was situated on water, while the new Drifter uses dry pavement.

Riders use a lever to create the drifting effect, which is reminiscent of the classic Whip ride. With the interactivity of the attraction, it is up to the passengers to decide how much and when to drift out. Smiles are automatic.

“The interactivity is the best attribute,” said Jeroen Nijpels, area sales manager, Zierer. “Furthermore, the wide variety of possible themes is attractive. We have made rally cars, and airboats are in production. We also have designs for quads and dune buggies and look forward to receiving suggestions from future clients as to some other original ideas. We are also working on options that include lighting and sound effects and hope to introduce these with the versions that will open in 2026.”

“The original appeal was a combination of the novelty, having a world’s first in the park and the potential appeal to a wide age range,” said Kirsi Aarresuo, rides operations manager, Särkänniemi. “A true family ride for a very decent budget. The park was looking for a new, marketable ride that wouldn’t break the bank. Särkänniemi has only a very short season, meaning that there’s only a short amount of time per year to get the return on investment.”

The diameter of the attraction is 10.8 meters (35.4 feet) with an operating diameter of 17.1 meters (56.1 feet). Hourly capacity is 540 riders.

The new ride is proving to be a success as three more have been sold.

“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive,” Aarresuo told Amusement Today. “Guests have really embraced the ride — they love the unique motion and the overall fun experience it offers. It has quickly become a favorite ride for many. The theming of the ride has been praised as well. The theming was made in collaboration with a local family-owned insurance company, Turva.”

Even though the product had never been seen before, Särkänniemi felt it was a good fit.

“We wanted something that would appeal to a broad range of guests, and this ride does exactly that. Thanks to its height requirement — starting from just 100 cm (3 feet, 3⅜ inches) when accompanied by an adult — families can enjoy it together. The customizable drifting motion also lets you fine-tune the experience, making it thrilling yet comfortable for everyone.”

Discussions with Zierer began well before any final decisions about the investment were made. “We worked closely together over a long period to ensure the concept and design were a perfect fit for Särkänniemi,” Aarresuo said.

AT asked Nijpels about the similarity to Zierer’s popular Jet Ski ride. “The idea is quite similar to a dry version of the popular Zierer Jet Skis ride. For some parks, the water aspect of the Jet Ski ride was not attractive, either because weather conditions do not allow or because of the implications on operations,” he answered. “So, when the idea of the Drifter was born, we immediately recognized the appeal of offering similar movements and especially the interactivity. As with the Jet Skis ride, the guest controls the movement. With the Jet Skis ride, the guest needs to steer to move the gondola towards the inner ring, whereas with the Drifter ride, the guest needs to pull the handbrake so the vehicle moves towards the outer ring. Then, when the guest lets loose, the vehicle moves back to its original position.”

Nothing within the park had to be removed to make space for Drifti.

“The new ride fits beautifully near our main entrance,” said Aarresuo. “It found a natural home right next to the Näsinneula Observation Tower, where it welcomes guests as soon as they arrive at the park.”

“This is a true family ride. The vehicles are large enough to accommodate two adults, and children from 3 to 7 years old can ride together with an adult,” noted Nijpels. “From 8 years and above they can ride by themselves. And because of the great dynamics of the ride, older children and teens appreciate the ride as well, as there is never a dull moment in the Drifter!”

“There’s always strong demand for high-quality family rides, and Drifti fills that need perfectly,” said Aarresuo. “It brings something fresh, fun and visually exciting to our lineup — a ride that everyone, from kids to grandparents, can enjoy together.”

Galacticoaster readies for liftoff at Merlin's Legoland Florida Resort

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. — There’s a new star rising over Central Florida, and it’s not in the night sky. Legoland Florida Resort has unveiled Galacticoaster, a sprawling, space-themed indoor coaster launching families into orbit in early 2026. The project has been more than three years in the making, and it’s shaping up to be one of the most ambitious builds in the park’s history.

Inside a 30,000-square-foot, 50-foot-tall structure, crews are already installing nearly 1,500 feet of steel track. The foundation alone required more than 400 concrete trucks in a single, 13-hour pour. This monolithic effort is just one of several feats that set the stage for what is being described as the most advanced attractions ever created for a Legoland park.

“This has been over three years in the making,” said Blake Boyter, the senior project manager for Merlin Magic Making. “From the very beginning, we wanted to immerse our guests. Not only on the great, amazing ride, but also in the queue line. The spirit doesn’t start on the ride. It starts the second you walk into the building.”

Families will soon step into Spaceport 885, a nod to Lego’s classic Space Scooter set, and board their own customizable Lego spacecraft. Once launched, they’ll navigate a galaxy built brick-by-brick and filled with cosmic scenes, glowing stars, and a few surprises tucked among the asteroids.

“It’s easy day to day to get lost in the small nuances that we go through to make this work,” Boyter added. “But the leaps and bounds we make from month to month are really exciting. People show up and say, ‘Wow, this is so much bigger than I thought it was going to be.’”

The ride’s massive scale and family-friendly design mark the first indoor coaster built inside the main gates since Legoland Florida opened in 2011. Beyond the ride itself, guests can expect an immersive pre-show experience, a Duplo Tot Spot for tiny astronauts, and the Orbital Outpost gift shop for mission souvenirs.

Merlin Entertainments calls the project part of a broader, nearly $94 million investment across its global portfolio, including twin space-themed attractions in Florida and California. The move reflects a larger strategy to blend storytelling and engineering on a cosmic scale.

When Galacticoaster finally opens its bay doors in 2026, guests won’t just be taking another spin through a themed coaster, they’ll be stepping into a Lego universe where imagination breaks free of gravity. For Legoland Florida, that’s one small step for bricks, one giant leap for family fun.

Intamin's Time Rider offers new, rare type of fun at Gyeonju World

GYEONGJU, South Korea — To help celebrate the 40th anniversary of Gyeongju World, the park installed Time Ride, a record-breaking coaster wheel. Having installed four new roller coasters in the previous seven seasons, the operators thought a new kind of thrill would continue to modernize the park.

Only a handful of coaster wheels operate around the world. The original, at 150 feet, is at Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park at Coney Island in New York. This new model boasts a record of 164 feet.

Manufactured by Intamin, the coaster wheel features 24 cabins. Guests visiting Gyeongju World who may be unfamiliar with the coaster wheel concept will find 16 cabins suspended by wheels that allow those units to roll and swing, both an exhilarating and unnerving experience. Those moving cabins combine panoramic views with ride action.

“Clients tend to do their own research without asking much to the manufacturer until they get their heart set on a specific ride,” said Chang Sun Lim, Intamin Korea. “The old Ferris wheel was 45 meters high, and the client had no appetite for the competition for heights at all. They focused on the uniqueness and function rather than the magnitude. Management went to Disney California Adventure to try the coaster wheel, followed by working staff to double confirm the soundness of their choice.”

The name of the attraction is Time Rider.

“The idea of ‘time’ fascinated our company officials the most,” said a park spokesperson. “After the concept idea was set to ‘time,’ various related names were proposed. It’s a name that best expresses the ride’s concept and story.”

The fixed cabins are called Time Keepers, while the swinging cabins are called Time Travelers.

The park spokesperson explained that other options were considered, but trademark rights hindered those names. “We decided on a cooler name: Time Rider,” they said.

A Ferris wheel was introduced to the park in 1986, the park’s second year of operation. In 2022, the ride was demolished, but because Ferris wheels are such staples in amusement parks, a new version was desired.

“In order to give customers a different pleasure than before, we decided to use Intamin’s coaster wheel,” the spokesperson said. “The impact of the coaster wheel was great.”

According to the park, Gyeongju World is the only theme park in Korea that has a Ferris wheel. Certainly, with only five coaster wheels globally, the ride is a true standout.

Time Rider is the latest in park additions.

“It’s fantastic and explosive,” the spokesperson told AT. “Gyeongju World started as a small amusement park in the region after its opening in 1985. “Starting with the introduction of B&M’s inverted roller coaster, Phaethon, in 2007, and continuing with Submarine Splash (2012), B&M dive coaster Draken in 2018, Gerstlauer’s shuttle coaster Valkyrie in 2021 and RMC’s single rail coaster, Skoll & Hati, in 2024, the park is now recognized as a thrill park representing Korea due to its aggressive introduction of unique attractions.”

The project was a partnership between Intamin and Forrec. The Toronto-based design company created the story, ride and vehicle theming, queue building and façade.

Forrec’s concept and design package for this project encompassed extensive graphic elements and signage design featuring upbeat but theme-appropriate typography, color palettes and custom LED lighting design. Forrec designed the central wheel logo and artwork to strict specifications; weight and wind loads were important technical considerations in ensuring safe operation of the massive wheel.

“At the heart of our design journey was a simple goal: to create a better wheel,” said Eric O’Rourke, senior director, Forrec. “Through a fantastic collaboration with the client and Intamin, we embraced the theme of time travel. This iconic new ride not only celebrates the vitality of the park but also offers serene views of Gyeongju’s beautiful countryside. In the end this isn’t just a ride; it’s a thrilling experience and our team had the privilege and pleasure of creating this new icon for the park. It has been an absolute pleasure working with Gyeongju World for over 20 years now, and we eagerly anticipate our next adventure together.”

Forrec has been involved with a dozen attractions at Gyeongju World, starting in 2002 with a long-term master plan and revitalization study for the park, followed by multiple theme park expansion and ride design projects, a new front gate design, park branding and wayfinding signage.

“Time Ride is six meters above ground, meaning it runs high to 51 meters. The foundation took more time than expected, which forced the beginning of the installation in late November,” said Chang Sun. “Cold and rainy days were the challenges to overcome. Overall progress was smooth.”

The park noticed in the early days of operation that social media platforms such as Instagram and YouTube were featuring uploaded videos from guests almost every day.

“Time Rider provides customers with great curiosity even before visiting the park,” said the spokesperson. “This is a unique concept of an Intamin moving Ferris wheel and a wonderful design production through Forrec.”

Huck Finn's Playland holds special place in heart of new owner

ALBANY, N.Y. — Joe Masher is a hands-on person, and that's why you'll likely find him in the ticket booth at Huck Finn's Playland, his small family amusement park with a storied history in the Albany area.

“I've always been in movie theaters,” the entrepreneur, who also happens to own cinemas in five states, told Amusement Today during an in-depth interview.

He broke into a chuckle as he continued, stating, “So, instead of showing movies, I'm selling tickets to go on rides.”

This year marked the 73rd season for the iconic park, which got its start as Hoffman's Playland in nearby Latham, New York. The property was originally owned and operated by Ruth and Dave Hoffman, who retired in 2014.

According to Masher, the rides were set to go on the auction block when the Hoffmans retired, but a local group committed to saving the regional treasure stepped in, and the auction never happened.

“After the group was formed, a local business came to the rescue,” Masher asserted. “It was a furniture outlet called Huck Finn's Warehouse, and they moved the park to the warehouse district in downtown Albany, about four miles from its original location, and the name was changed to Huck Finn's.”

Moving the rides to their new digs was a monumental task that took months of planning, as well as some long days for construction crews to get everything set into place. The park opened at its Albany location in time for the 2015 season.

Saved again

After operating for less than a decade under the new ownership, it appeared the park had again reached the end of the line.

“The brothers who owned Huck Finn's retired, and when they sold off the furniture store, they no longer wanted the park,” Masher said of the predicament. “I asked a friend familiar with the situation what they were going to do with the rides. They were able to set up a meeting with the owners where the deal for me to buy the park was made.”

Masher's Scene One Entertainment acquired Huck Finn's Playland at the close of the 2023 season, and the new owner, a native of nearby Troy, New York, has been happy to wear various hats at the property ever since.

“I rode these rides as a child when my grandfather used to take me to Hoffman's,” he recalled. “I'm always in the ticket booth when possible, greeting and talking with guests. It's great to hear many of them reminisce about coming here when they were kids. Today, local people are bringing their children and grandchildren to the park.”

If not selling tickets, the 58-year-old businessman may be found driving the train or operating the carousel.

Classics still at work

Huck Finn's Playland is a throwback to the traditional amusement properties of yesteryear, which is reflected in its arsenal of classic rides.

Among the attractions are a ground-mount Paratrooper (Hrubetz), Octopus (Eyerly), Tilt-A-Whirl (Larson), Ferris wheel, Little Wheel and Scrambler (Eli Bridge), and combo umbrella ride and Tubs-O-Fun (Hampton).

The park has a collection of Allan Herschell rides, most of which date back to the 1950s and '60s. A rare Jolly Caterpillar is a highlight, with only a handful in operation. Other Herschell rides include Sky Fighter jets, helicopter, Little Dipper roller coaster, two Iron Horse trains, wet boats and a three-abreast carousel. Herschell produced those attractions in North Tonawanda and Buffalo, New York.

One of the newest additions at the facility is a Frederiksen Fun Slide.

“Our Flying Elephants is actually a rare 1957 Herschell Rodeo ride that was modified in a partnership with Dreamland Amusements,” the park owner pointed out. The Nevada-based carnival used the original ride mechanism to create the attraction.

Huge obstacle

While preparing for the 2025 season, the annual assembly of the carousel came to an abrupt halt owing to component issues.

“It's always the last ride to be reassembled, and this year we discovered the main gear and some other parts had taken a turn for the worse,” Masher explained. “The main gear is cast iron, and we had to contact Chance Rides (Wichita, Kansas) to get a new one along with other replacement parts.”

Chance Rides acquired the manufacturing rights to Herschell products in 1970. Chance sold those rights — except for carousels — in 1997 when the Allan Herschell Co. returned to North Tonawanda. Today, the Herschell firm provides parts for its other existing rides.

Huck Finn's received the replacement parts just in time to reopen its ride on July 25, National Carousel Day. Though the drive system, supports, deck, and horses are all Herschell, the scenery on the carousel was updated in the 1980s with Chance components, Masher asserted.

Maintenance guru

The park owner feels fortunate in having seasoned mechanic Dave Matthews on staff to maintain the equipment.

“He has been with us 36 years and still keeps these things running,” Masher said of his maintenance supervisor, who works as a vendor for the park.

When I took over the business, most of the decorative plastic tail spinners on the helicopters were broken. Dave built a mold and made new ones in his shop. The helicopters were one of my favorites as a youngster.”

Tickets, please

Huck Finn's has also adhered to its tradition of being a ticketed amusement park.

“We still sell paper tickets and ring up food orders on a cash register,” the proprietor emphasized. “We're very old-fashioned.”

A single ticket is $4, with 10 tickets discounted at $32 or 25 for $45. Kiddie rides take one ticket, with the four major rides requiring two.

During the height of the season, the park runs $20 wristband on Tuesdays as a special promotion. The wristband deal is offered on Sundays during the off-season. The last Friday of every month features an adult night — 21 and older — which includes the major rides, cash bar and disc jockey.

“It has been extremely popular,” Masher said of the Friday event.

He has also used the database from his theater operations to spur day camp and other recreational group sales. Birthday parties at the park have also become popular and include pizza, a ride wristband, a treat coupon and beverages for $33 per person. The property can accommodate up to three parties a day with a maximum of 36 per party.

“Riding this small Ferris wheel as a child frightened me, but it was a joyous scare. So, owning it now is rather ironic,” the businessman reflected. “This park has a very special place in my heart, and I want to preserve it.”

Classic Arrow Steeplechase inspires new generation of ride

S&S Worldwide has created family-friendly Rail Ryder attraction

LOGAN, Utah — Good ideas sometimes get even better with a little innovation. S&S Worldwide serves as the caretaker for the parts and services of numerous Arrow Dynamics rides. Prior to the pandemic, the ride manufacturer looked at the possibility of reaching into the past to recreate some of Arrow’s legacy rides. While only a couple were ever created, the Steeplechase rides were beloved. One still exists at Blackpool Pleasure Beach.

However, in almost half a century, codes and standards have changed. While there was some interest in the concept, S&S soon realized one of the biggest stumbling blocks to this ride reaching its potential was owed to capacity … or lack thereof.

“This is the next generation of the Arrow Steeplechase,” said Jason Mons, CEO, S&S. “We temporarily shelved it, and then in 2023, we had an ‘aha’ moment where we knew we could make modifications and turn it into a multi-rider experience. The plate between the [upper and lower] rails does a lot of things. In addition to spanning longer distances, it creates a unique aesthetic. It also allows for a lot of theming options; it could be painted different colors or a vinyl application, or [we could add] lights. The train itself doesn’t touch the ‘ribbon’ plate.”

The ride manufacturer was fully aware that there were other single-rail coasters on the market, but those are marketed for white-knuckle thrills. S&S went a different direction.

“The ride was designed from the ground up to be a family thrill coaster,” Mons said. “We wanted to get anyone from a 3- or 4-year-old child up to a bigger sibling and for grandparents to ride and not be intimidated. This was intended to be a family coaster.”

The height requirement is 39 inches.

S&S has designed three model sizes. The smallest is fully erected at the facility in Utah, ready to be sold and relocated to a customer’s facility.

“The one at our facility is our smallest one at 45 feet tall. The next one up has a 60-foot lift hill, and our largest one has both. On that larger one, we can achieve a capacity of more than 1,000 with four trains,” Mons said.

The trains on the ride are exceptionally comfortable, with an open feeling using a locked belt as the restraint.

“Like any coaster, we can do a full custom layout and adapt it to any environment the park has,” Mons said. “The speed on these coasters can go up to 35 mph, which doesn’t sound like a lot, but you gain a sensation of speed when you are sitting right on that rail. If a park had a forest or hill, you could increase that sense of speed, while it still maintains that 35 mph.”

“The design ethos of Rail Ryder was to make it approachable to riders of all ages but not to be intimidating,” said Trever Dyer, marketing. “We also wanted it to be approachable and not intimidating to potential parks and buyers and FECs and mountain venues looking for that next step up from a mountain coaster but don’t want to commit to a full-fledged project of a big, scary coaster. The design wasn’t just for the riders but for the parks at the same time.”

S&S said they were working with suppliers of installation labor to get a turnkey cost prepared for them.

“We’ve definitely tried to minimize the amount of structural columns, hence the ribbon steel and solid plate between the two rails that allows us to have greater spans between columns,” noted Dyer.

Multiple themed concepts have been explored by the company in terms of designing the trains.

“We’ve employed some third-party engineering firms to make sure everything is truly feasible,” Dyer told Amusement Today. “We know theming can create weight issues, and we’ve vetted that out. We have a farm theme with tractors and animals, or race cars. We’ve looked at motorbike styles and mine trains. Getting back to that nostalgia of the Arrow mine trains has been appealing to some of our customers so far. Recognizing global expansion, we’re looking at a flying carpet theme as well.”

“One of the neat things about these themes is because the base price is so inexpensive, it can allow parks to have a truly themed ride,” added Mons. “We are able to resurrect those older-style rides and provide those in a Rail Ryder concept.”

To maximize space, queuing could take place inside the infield of the ride, or other rides pass through, creating interaction, or smaller rides can fit inside.

Mons is pleased with another point. “We installed this entire ride with a tele-handler. There were no cranes or specialty equipment,” he said. “Somebody could use local rentals and install themselves if they had to with the assistance of our managers.”

“We started this early in 2024 when we started the design,” said Chris Reynolds, mechanical/project engineer. “After about eight months of design, we started ordering at the end of March [2025]. It didn’t take long to go up.”

According to management, erection takes about two weeks, with commissioning taking another four.

“I like the back seat coming off the lift hill,” Reynolds said. “It has a nice swoop to it. I love the front seat for the horseshoe.”

Inspired by own history, Pacific Park debuts entertaining, scary Funhouse

SANTA MONICA, Calif. — A brand-new funhouse opened at California's Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier just in time for the Halloween season. The funhouse at Pacific Park held its grand opening on September 10, bringing along its main creepy character, Sprinkles the Clown.

According to Cameron Andrews, Pier Communications, guests are enjoying the new attraction.

“People were very positive and upbeat about the opening,” Andrews said.

According to the park’s website, "the Funhouse at Pacific Park was inspired by the legendary Toonerville Funhouse that appeared in two eras of Santa Monica amusement history, first at Ocean Park Pier in the 1920s and later at Pacific Ocean Park in 1958, thrilling and unnerving guests for decades."

The funhouse was forgotten after being closed at Pacific Ocean Park.

And then: “Over time, storms and renovations buried its memory, until the entrance to the abandoned funhouse was mysteriously uncovered inside Pacific Park,” according to the website. “With a little polishing, it has reopened for guests as a nod to local Santa Monica history and nostalgic fun.”

It was certainly meant to be.

Park officials designed the new 2,800-square-foot attraction as an immersive walk-through attraction, featuring nine themed rooms, optical illusions and surprises, with a storyline that includes Sprinkles as well as a vintage fortune teller. Guests are enjoying finding their way through a mirror maze, balancing on a high wire in an upside-down world and crawling through a giant gumball machine.

The goal is to get through the funhouse while staying away from Sprinkles and his creepy ice cream truck.

The Funhouse at Pacific Park is for guests five years old and older.

According to a report on kxan.com, S.C. Holdings, an investment firm with experience in the consumer, entertainment, and hospitality sectors, acquired the operating group of Pacific Park in 2024 and committed $10 million in capital investments over the next five years in Pacific Park. This is part of those improvements. Others include food and entertainment programs, supporting park operations, and keeping it a fun, family-friendly destination for all.

Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier features approximately 12 rides and attractions, including the West Coaster and Pacific Wheel, the first solar-powered Ferris wheel. It also offers midway games, ocean-front specialty food and seaside shopping.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Just as family entertainment centers evolve from arcades and laser tag arenas to mini-amusement parks, other FECs have evolved into interactive art displays and immersive exhibits such as those offered by Meow Wolf (with locations in Houston and Grapevine Texas; Las Vegas, Nevada; Denver, Colorado and Santa Fe, New Mexico) and Otherworld (which first opened in Columbus, Ohio and expanded into Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, in 2023). In 2025, the classic FEC arcade and these interactive, immersive experiences converged with the unveiling of Gamegrounds in Columbus, Ohio.

In the spring of 2019, when Otherworld first opened in Columbus, it combined the best elements of an escape room, a haunted house, an art museum and an FEC to create a truly unique experience in the Columbus area. In February of 2025, those same creative masterminds behind Otherworld launched their latest brainchild, the immersive Gamegrounds.

Designed to be everything a guest's inner child (and outer adult) didn’t know it needed, Gamegrounds is an otherworldly, carnival-style gaming concept that borrows the same interactive platform at the foundation of Otherworld. Located in a 12,000-square-foot space adjacent to the original Otherworld, Gamegrounds is an immersive art, indoor gaming hub featuring a slew of new and classic midway games — with a neon-heavy, surreal aesthetic — that encourage guests to both compete and cooperate in a set of unforgettable experiences.

“I started creating haunted houses commercially when I was in college, transitioning into the escape game realm in 2015,” said Jordan Renda, creator of Otherworld, as he prepared to open Ohio's original immersive art experience in 2019. “I started looking for the next iteration of the concept — something that combines interactivity and narrative of an escape game, but with a larger space and production budget that allows for more creative freedom.”

Gamegrounds was a natural evolution for that original concept.

"Gamegrounds is an electrifying, artist-reimagined carnival featuring high-tech immersive room-scale games for adults and kids alike," describes the location's website.

It is designed for groups of two to six people, making it the perfect outing for friends, family or even coworkers. Guests purchase a 75-minute unlimited gaming session to explore as many games as they want. The experience includes a wristband with an RFID chip, allowing guests to play as many games as they want within the 75-minute slot.

The timed ticketing setup invites players to go all out and explore a range of exciting games. There are puzzles to solve, physical challenges, and good old-fashioned competitive game ensuring there’s something for all to enjoy. And all while exploring a vibrant, artist-designed space that’s straight out of a sci-fi dream.

There's a total of 12 immersive, carnival-style games featured, including a neon basketball game and a Skee-Ball-inspired contest that has contestants aim for the mouth of a massive clown cutout.

A highlight of the experience is one of the first games guests encounter when starting the experience, Space Boopers. This 3-D spinoff of the classic arcade game Galactica has patrons manning gun turrets to take down alien spaceships on the ceiling. In a case of art imitating art, this particular game takes direct inspiration from one of the original displays within Otherworld where guests literally stepped through a classic arcade game cabinet to find themselves inside of it and able to play.

Nearby is another highlight (pun intended) attraction dubbed Light Juggler, where players must keep lights soaring above them by hitting a circular array of buttons just as the glowing lights descend.

Gamegrounds was originally opened as a temporary attraction in the area and was slated to shutter after June 2025. However, the experiences proved so popular that its owners announced in July that the colorful experience would remain open throughout 2025.

Growth financing announced for Five Iron Golf U.A.E. franchisees

DUBAI, U.A.E — Five Iron Golf’s U.A.E. franchisee, which already operates the successful flagship Five Iron Dubai, announced that it has successfully closed a growth financing round led by Powerhouse Capital, with participation from NFL legend Larry Fitzgerald Jr., recent PGA Tour winner Kurt Kitayama, LPGA star Alison Lee and managing partner of Sharp Alpha Lloyd Danzig. Rain dampens attendance, creates challenges at Kansas State Fair

HUTCHINSON, Kan. — “Weather played a big factor in the attendance of the 2025 Kansas State Fair,” said General Manager Bryan Schulz. “We received about a half an inch of rain on the first day of the fair and then a little over two additional inches on Monday. With the amount of moisture that we had received over the summer, the water table in our area was very high and had nowhere for the water to go. This caused a huge problem with our parking lots, which we ended up having to close. This caused us to pivot, and we had to move all parking to several locations throughout the city of Hutchinson, including the mall and Hutchinson Community College. . We were finally able to get back into two of the three major lots on the last Friday of the fair and into all of the lots late day on the last Saturday. This caused a major decrease in attendance.”

That decrease amounted to nearly 28,000 fewer fairgoers during the 10-day event this year over 2024.

The theme of the fair was “Get Fairified at the Kansas State Fair,” Schulz explained. “We work with a marketing agency, and this was our third year having this theme. Fairification is easy. “North American Midway Entertainment (NAME) was proud to once again serve as the official midway provider for the 2025 Kansas State Fair, bringing a diverse lineup of attractions, games and food concessions to Hutchinson,” said Lynda Franc, corporate marketing director.

All told, there were 40 rides, 17 of them were kiddie rides, along with 8 food stands and 27 games.

“This year’s midway featured exciting new rides, including the Downdraft by Battech and the Cliff Hanger by Dartron, alongside crowd favorites like the Pinfari Bullet Train coaster, Chance Giant Wheel, and Chance Pharaoh’s Fury,” said Franc. Our relationship with the Kansas State Fair remains one of the highlights of our season. The fair has deep agricultural roots, however, it doesn’t just highlight farming — it celebrates Kansas culture, people, products and pride. The exhibits, foods, entertainment and contests center around what makes Kansas unique — from local artisans to Kansas-based companies and performers.

“Many visitors note its accessible size: large enough to impress, but small enough to feel personal,” said Schulz.

Few fairs balance heritage and modernization as effectively. You’ll find draft horse pulls and antique tractors alongside cutting-edge agriculture equipment — a true celebration of Kansas’ past and future.

Schulz talked about their media mix. “We have a mix of digital/social email/SMS for most of our promotional offerings and then add TV and radio buys closer to the fair. Email marketing once again proved to be our strongest sales driver. Efforts to expand the database were successful, particularly through sign-ups tied to concert presales. We have also concentrated on building our SMS texting database. We only utilize a small portion of printed media — using local papers and mainly negotiating ticket trades instead of paid ads. Our marketing budget is around $475,000. We used social media for more paid ads for concert advertising and promotions versus organic posts.”

“We expanded our social ambassador program, explained Schultz. “Ambassadors are selected based on their application submissions to represent the fair through their social media and are invited to complete activities from June through August. Tasks include sharing posts from the Kansas State Fair, creating their own posts, and other actions. They earn points for every action taken to earn fair tickets, including gate admission, concert, midway tickets and ticket packages. This year, we had around 58 active participants,” explained Schulz.

The fair had 94 food vendors. Some of the more interesting food offerings included truffle burger — The Beer Garden, fried pies — Little B’s Fried Pies, blackened shrimp — Midstate Cookers, fried brownie bites and pulled pork corn dog — Pop’s Place, firecracker wontons, lobster corn dogs and cookie butter beignets — Waddle Wagon and pineapple smoothie – Fry Shack D Dusek Concessions.

Grandstand entertainment included Sam Barber with Avery Anna, Jeff Dunham, Josh Turner with Jason Scott & the High Heat, Josiah Queen with Ben Fuller, Hairball, Ludacris with DJ Infamous, The Fray with Plain White Ts and Lorrie Morgan with Mason Ramsey.

Schulz talked about the employment challenges. “This is an issue every year. We are always looking for people who want to be part of the Kansas State Fair Family. We worked with an employment agency this year and that seemed to work better verses searching for and hiring ourselves.”

The 2026 edition returns September 11- 20.

The Big E welcomed more than 1.5 million guests during 17-day run

WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — “We had three record-setting days and it was an amazing and safe fair,” an enthusiastic Eugene Cassidy, president and CEO of the Eastern States Exposition (ESE), told Amusement Today following the close of the 2025 edition of The Big E.

Total attendance for the 17-day event (September 12-28) was 1,538,463, according to Cassidy, and rainy weather did impact the final Wednesday and Thursday.

“People did come out despite that rain, and we closed out very strong on the final weekend,” he noted. The all-time attendance mark for The Big E was set in 2024 when 1,633,935 people passed through the gates.

NAME on the midway

North American Midway Entertainment (NAME) marked its 21st consecutive year at the exposition with 50 rides, a highlight being its 150-foot Bussink Super Wheel.

Other featured attractions included Sky Screamer and Star Dancer (Technical Park), Wave Swinger (Preston & Barbieri), Himalaya and Starship 4000 (Wisdom), Skater (Zamperla), Pharaoh's Fury and Century Wheel (Chance Rides), Ring of Fire (Larson), Vertigo (ARM) and Super Cyclone roller coaster (Interpark).

Kiddieland had more than a dozen attractions, with a Chance Rides double-decker carousel a focal point along with a lineup of Hampton Umbrella Rides.

An advance sale discount midway voucher was offered for $33.50, valid for 78 weekend credits or a single weekday wristband.

“We had a lot of rides on the midway, and it looked as great on day 17 as the day it opened,” Cassidy said of NAME's operation. “Their staff really buys into our culture, and due to that, we named one of their team members as The Big E 'host of the day.'“

Entertainment

always a draw

The Big E Circus Spectacular, a popular family attraction since its introduction in 1955, drew crowds at its three daily performances.

“There were huge lines for every show,” the fair official noted. “And it was certainly spectacular this year, especially with the Globe of Death with a four-wheeler in the caged dome with other guys on motorcycles.”

Cassidy explained, “Booking acts is getting tougher, and what we in the fair industry are doing helps to keep many of these circus acts going.”

Bleacher seating in the big top was included with fair admission, with pre-sale ringside seating tickets available online.

Another huge offering to fairgoers was the Court Of Honor concert series, also included with gate admission. The Marshall Tucker Band drew one of the largest crowds with an 8 p.m. show on September 17. Oldies rock-n-rollers Chubby Checker, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, The Grass Roots, Elliot Lurie of Looking Glass with Yacht Rock Gold Experience and The Stylistics were among other featured acts during the fair.

Premium seating in the first five rows of the covered concert arena was available at an additional fee for some shows.

The Big E Arena brought in numerous top-name acts with tickets ranging from $54 to $284, which included fair admission.

“Gov't Mule did marvelous,” Cassidy asserted. “Busta Rhymes and Rick Ross (rap/hip-hop) killed it and ZZ Top sold out as our final act of the fair.”

High school students

rock with Foreigner

Rock band Foreigner performed on September 21 and invited the Westfield High School Show Choir, Westfield, Massachusetts, to join the band onstage.

As Foreigner kicked into a powerful performance of “I Want to Know What Love Is,” the band's top hit, students from the choir made their way to center stage to sing backup for the band's frontman, Kelly Hansen.

As the song ended, Hansen explained that the band has a longstanding tradition of bringing choral groups onstage to give a platform to the arts in education.

“When budget cuts come, they go for music and the arts,” said Hansen. “That is a mistake because we need a world filled with people that want to explore creativity, music, the arts, literature, and create new pieces for all of us to experience in the years to come.”

Drummer Chris Frazier stepped in front of the group and handed his drumsticks to a young lady who smiled widely and showed them off to the applauding crowd.

Cassidy also commented on the band's actions, saying: “The guys in Foreigner were very kind to have the choir perform with them. The crowd of 6,000 certainly reacted to their generosity.”

Big draw

Exhibits and competitions were extremely strong during The Big E, according to Cassidy.

“Our agriculture department had more entries than ever before,” he reported. “We had ag entries from 26 states and Canada. We used to attract from just New England. And we had 18 states with participants in Future Farmers of America (FFA) activities.

I'm very proud of our ag team here at ESE as they continue to show the pathway for young people to get involved with agriculture through FFA.”

Daily parades throughout the ESE grounds, along with cultural demonstrations and entertainment in the Storrowton Village Museum, are also part of the annual experience at The Big E.

Many fairgoers visit the Avenue of States, where replicas of each New England state's original statehouse sit on a tract of land owned by that state. The buildings are packed with products and services unique to each New England state.

Advance sale admission tickets to The Big E were: $17.50 adult (13+), or $20 at the gate; $11.50 for kids 6 to 12, or $12 at the gate. Five and under were free. A 17-day pass was $71.50 for adults and $36.50 for kids.

Cassidy summed up the annual exhibition, stating: “What we do in the fair industry matters a great deal to our American culture. We're sometimes demonized by the press and the weather, but we need to stand tall because what we do really matters.”

The 2026 edition of The Big E is slated for September 18 through October 4.

Virginia Beach welcomes first Wavegarden Surf Park in the U.S.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The surfing community on the East Coast is celebrating a new era of consistent, world-class waves with the opening of Atlantic Park, a state-of-the-art surf park featuring Wavegarden’s acclaimed Cove technology. Located in Virginia Beach, the birthplace of East Coast surfing, the new facility, operated by Beach Street Development, opened to the public this past August.

For generations, East Coast surfers have been at the mercy of unpredictable ocean swells. The new surf lagoon changes that, offering a reliable source of high-quality waves just steps from the Atlantic Ocean.

“Virginia Beach is the perfect location to open our first Wavegarden Cove,” said Fernando Odriozola, Wavegarden’s CCO. “It has a strong surf community and a high visitation volume — the only thing missing was great waves. Now that’s covered, we’re excited to see the town and broader community thrive.”

The technology behind the park is a 46-module Wavegarden Cove that can produce up to 1,000 waves per hour. Surfers can choose from a “wave menu” of more than 25 different wave types, ranging from gentle, long waves for beginners to powerful waves that allow advanced surfers to perform turns, airs and barrels. The system is also designed for efficiency, with the lowest energy and water consumption on the market.

Before the public opening, a group of top American surfers, including pros Cam Richards, Michael Dunphy, Jacob Szekely and Blayr Barton, were invited to test the waves. During the commissioning process, they provided real-time feedback to Wavegarden’s fluid dynamics experts, who fine-tuned the waves' power, height and shape.

“The issue of inconsistent conditions that we surfers on the East Coast constantly face has just been solved,” said Richards, a professional surfer who often travels for training.

Local surf champion Dunphy echoed the sentiment, stating, “When it comes to surfing, Virginia Beach has a deep, rich history and a legendary crew of surfers. Now, we finally have the waves to match.”

Even young surfers were impressed. Thirteen-year-old Bella Faircloth, an aspiring pro, scored what she called the “best barrels of her life” during her first session. “The barrel waves were super good, super hollow, with an easy entry and exit — they were my favorites,” she exclaimed.

Professional surfer and wave pool enthusiast Szekely, a Californian, declared the new facility “the best surf park in America” and praised its air section as “the best, by far.”

Atlantic Park’s 55-minute sessions can host up to 40 surfers at a time and will be available year-round. Surrounding the lagoon is a premium beach club with lounge chairs and cabanas, offering a relaxing environment for surfers and non-surfers alike.

The surf lagoon is the centerpiece of the $350 million Atlantic Park complex. This new destination captures the spirit of Virginia Beach with a curated mix of unique shopping, dining, creative office space, and urban residences, all built around a state-of-the-art live entertainment venue. Its unique placement makes it the world's only human-made wave park situated just steps from the Atlantic Ocean.

The 10.95-acre development integrates a surf park with urban residential units, an indoor/outdoor entertainment venue, shops, restaurants and office space. This blend of uses is designed to create a vibrant atmosphere that honors and continues the community's authentic music and surf heritage.

Atlantic Park will also be home to a new 70,000-square-foot entertainment venue that honors the legacy of “The Dome” — a beloved cultural landmark that stood for more than 35 years. The original Virginia Beach Dome was a futuristic aluminum-shelled geodesic auditorium built in 1958. It was known for hosting legends such as Louis Armstrong, The Rolling Stones and Jimi Hendrix. The dome began to deteriorate in the 1980s and was demolished in 1994, leaving the site vacant.

The new dome, which opened in May 2025, offers a state-of-the-art indoor-outdoor music and entertainment hall. It has a capacity of 3,500 indoor seats with retractable hangar doors that open to the outside, increasing the capacity to 5,000. The band Three Dog Night, which played the final show at the original Dome in 1993, performed at the new venue's first show.

On days without scheduled events, the outdoor amphitheater converts into a community park, providing a space for art fairs, markets, free performances and other activities that boost the area's cultural scene.

The participation of Virginia Beach's own Pharrell Williams as a principal will give Atlantic Park worldwide attention. Williams — a Virginia Beach native, renowned singer, songwriter, fashion designer, and entrepreneur — will grant Atlantic Park global exposure. His involvement creates an opportunity for significant economic expansion, establishing Virginia Beach as a destination with a rich culture available throughout the year.

Atlantic Park is a public-private partnership among the Virginia Beach Development Authority, Venture Realty Group, Pharrell Williams, W.M. Jordan Company, Bishard Development and Priority Title/H20 Investments.

Virginia’s own Hanbury provided the lead design for the project in cooperation with Cooper Carry Architects New York which served as the architect of record.

With this new opening, Wavegarden continues to solidify its position as a global leader in surf parks, with 12 parks now in operation worldwide. The company has two more projects underway in the United States: DSRT Surf in Palm Desert, California, and HTX Surf in Houston, Texas, both will be operated by Beach Street Development.

Museum of Illusions experiences 10 years of very real growth

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — In the world of location-based entertainment, standing out can be a challenge. For the last 10 years, the Museum of Illusions has become one of the most unique and repeatable destinations and international brands. Currently, in more than 28 countries, there are more than 63 museum locations, making the company the largest private museum chain in the world. Four new museums, including the first location in Australia, are on track to open by the end of the year.

Last year, Kim Schaefer was appointed chief executive officer of the Museum of Illusions to guide the next chapter of growth for the company. After leading national brands including Great Wolf Resorts and Two-Bit Circus, Schaefer has turned her focus to the micro-visit destination.

“Mission and vision are critical to any good guest experience, whether it's for a couple of hours or a multi-night stay,” Schaefer shared. “As we continue to introduce and re-introduce the Museum of Illusions experience, our internal culture and brand promise drive every decision. The Museum of Illusions began in 2015 in Croatia. Two friends who loved puzzles, dilemma games and illusions parlayed their passion into the first location, and together they launched the Museum of Illusions as a franchise company, which then grew into an international brand. With the addition of Schaefer and a new corporate team based in Arizona, Schaefer and her team are constantly moving.

We’ve even seen an increase in retirees. They have the time to fully explore and take in everything we have to offer as they try to figure out each illusion. Several locations have had buses bring tour groups ready to explore.”

“Working with such a wide-ranging brand is also a great challenge,” he added. “It gives us so many opportunities to tell different stories, across different marketing channels. How we deliver marketing meetings that draw people in, so that they will want to experience what we have to offer, is important. We then hit on all those expectations when they arrive.”

Service matters and quality guest engagement are part of the team member culture. “Taking memorable photos is a key activity at each location,” Schaefer shared. “Our team members are experts in helping our guests stage their photo, make suggestions and help them pull it together. We have been building a culture and team environment that supports an incredible product. Our guest feedback and satisfaction scores speak for themselves.”

She points to the museum in Las Vegas as an example. “There is so much to see and do in Las Vegas, and that location consistently earns high experience scores. Our guests find us and make us part of their Las Vegas visit. I say it all the time, along with the science, we must have the spectacle and the service — that combination sets us apart.”

Partnerships are also becoming part of the Museum of Illusions' DNA. A promotional partnership with Match.com gave singles the opportunity to come together in a non-traditional setting. “It was a different way to showcase the Museum of Illusions,” Levey said. “The typical date often takes place in a bar. Match.com was looking for an innovative way to help singles meet and chat. It was our first national partnership, and allowed us to show the engaging, interactive aspect of our museums to a new audience.”

Last November, on International STEM Day, the company announced a long-term national partnership with STEM.org to help make STEM learning more accessible and relatable to diverse communities. Each museum’s engaging, hands-on experiences appealed to STEM.org, particularly with the fun and immersive ways science and technology learning are applied, displayed at each location. Additionally, the Museum of Illusions provides complimentary admission to teachers to help them integrate STEM themes into lesson plans and field trip planning.

Partnership opportunities also help remain true to its brand promise. “The simplicity of the operation allows us to remain focused,” Schaefer shared. “While we have some grab-and-go snacks and drinks available for sale, we do not have on-site food and beverage operations. This allows us to fully focus on our illusions, exhibits and guest service. At each location, we are exploring and building partnerships with nearby restaurants, caterers and other such companies. IAAPA Expo Europe demonstrates world-wide attractions vitality

BARCELONA, Spain — IAAPA Expo Europe 2025 has officially wrapped up, bringing together attractions industry professionals from across the globe for five days of education, networking and discovery of the latest innovations. It was held September 22-26, at the Fira Barcelona Gran Via.

The event for leisure and attractions professionals in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) drew in 15,877 verified attendees from a total of 18,168 registered.

The show floor welcomed 11,477 qualified buyers representing 9,370 buying companies across 121 countries. Industry professionals explored 20,700 square-meters (22,2812 square feet) of exhibition space showcasing innovations from more than 700 exhibitors.

Attendees represented a diverse range of attractions, including amusement and theme parks, water parks, family entertainment centers, zoos, aquariums, museums, and resorts.
“IAAPA Expo Europe continues to serve as a vital meeting point for our industry, bringing together passionate professionals to share knowledge, explore trends and build lifelong connections,” said Peter van der Schans, executive director and vice president for IAAPA EMEA. “We are proud to see the industry come together once again in Barcelona.”
In addition to the trade show, IAAPA Expo Europe featured over 60 EDUSessions led by industry leaders, offering insights on topics such as sustainability, guest experience, safety, technology and emerging trends. Attendees also participated in EDUTours to PortAventura World, Water World, and MSC cruise lines, gaining a behind-the-scenes look at sustainability, operations and guest engagement strategies.

This year’s Expo garnered regional media coverage throughout Barcelona and beyond. Stand-out moments included the announcement of the new Vekoma family coaster coming to Karls Erlebnisdorf, and Van Hoorne Studios, Themics Philippines Inc., and Petro Art Production announcing the new Avonturenpark de Tovertuin theme park coming to the Netherlands in 2026.

Behind the scenes, IAAPA’s onsite Press Office welcomed over 100 journalists from Spain, France and Germany, with coverage spanning media outlets such as La Vanguardia, EFE Agency, ABC TV, The New Barcelona Post and Cuatro TV.
A variety of activities took place to build awareness and generate funds for the IAAPA Foundation including a unique game activation provided by H.B. Leisure.




During the meeting the IAAPA Global Board of Directors elected nine new board members who will begin their terms in 2026.

IAAPA’s global board collaborates with the IAAPA team to establish and ultimately approve the strategic priorities of the association. The board approves IAAPA’s annual business plans, oversees the association’s finances, provides feedback on IAAPA products and services, and advocates for IAAPA members. Board members also serve as global goodwill ambassadors.

The slate of new board members was developed and recruited by the IAAPA Governance Committee, which reviewed 47 applications for nine open positions. Each applicant was carefully evaluated based on industry experience, areas of professional expertise, prior IAAPA volunteer service and the knowledge and skills needed to advance IAAPA’s mission.

Go-kart supplier J&J Amusements marks its 50th anniversary

SALEM, Ore. — Just ask Dan Hansen and he'll tell you that "everybody loves go-karts."

And it's no wonder that he speaks so highly of the product that has been at the heart of his career for more than three decades. As general manager of J&J Amusements Inc., Hansen talked openly about the employee-owned company, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

The history of the venerable business dates back to 1957, when twin brothers Jim and John Huish, freshmen in college at the time, built a miniature golf course using packed sawdust for the fairways and greens.

They went on to become pioneers in the family entertainment industry, building a number of miniature golf courses across central and southern California. They eventually remodeled them into a chain of Huish Family Fun Centers.

According to Hansen, the brothers created their own style of the bumper boat in 1975, and J&J Recreation was born. The Huishs ramped up production in a manufacturing facility in California.

"They patented their version of the bumper boat," Hansen noted. "It was the first 'modern' bumper boat on the market."

Jim Huish was killed in a construction accident in 1984, but his brother John kept the company moving forward by bringing in new partners and kick-starting go-kart production in 1990.

"The company name was changed to J&J Amusements then," Hansen said of the evolution. "The company continued to make its bumper boats in California but made the go-karts in Oregon."

All operations were moved to the Oregon facility in 1993.

Transition of the business

In 2001, the employee takeover of the company started with 30 percent of the business purchased by workers. Hansen said the remaining 70 percent was paid off in 2013, the same year the Huish brothers were inducted into the International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions Hall of Fame for their contributions to the industry. John Huish died in 2021.

"I started here in '91 in the service department," the company official said. "I was the person who took the phone calls and went out in the field. I figured out the problems and how to fix them."

Hansen became general manager of the company in 2022 and likes to share his enthusiasm about where J&J is today.

"It's unusual for a company to make both gas and electric go-karts, but we do both," he emphasized. "We were among the first to build electric karts and have been doing so for 26 years. Gas-powered is still our primary go-kart product, and we work with Honda in developing engines for us."

J&J produces a variety of thrilling vehicles for children and adults, even a double-seat version.

As for continuing popularity, Hansen said go-kart sales generate "a lot of revenue" for the company and go head-to-head at venues which also offer miniature golf.

Other products

J&J's bumper boats have also evolved into both gas and electric models.

While domestic sales have been solid throughout the years, Hansen said, "There are a lot of our bumper boats in Europe and elsewhere."

The company also produces commercial batting machines and cages with its ABC (Automated Batting Cages) division. All of the components for those products are made at the Salem plant.

"We also acquired a spring company a few years back, so we make our own spring bumpers for go-karts," Hansen said of J&J's Benz Spring Company.

Besides leaf springs, the firm manufactures a variety of other products such as cargo restraints, clutches, drivelines and exhaust and steering parts.

All final assembly and testing are done in-house, while fiberglass work and some specialized laser cutting are outsourced. Engines and motors for J&J products are provided by other vendors.

"We also maintain an East Coast warehouse for go-kart tire distribution," he asserted. "This allows us to get the most common part shipped immediately."

The J&J Amusements facility consists of 37,000 square feet, which includes manufacturing, spare parts and offices. The company currently has 21 employees.

J&J products are found at family entertainment centers (FECs), amusement parks and municipal recreation facilities. Hansen said the company's biggest market is with FECs.

And he has an optimistic outlook for J&J, stating: "The company is strong, no doubt. We have a good product line and keep it up-to-date, meeting our customers' needs."

Smile tech is the key to unlocking memorable fun at Epic Universe

ORLANDO — It begins not with the swipe of a ticket or the scan of a phone app, but with a smile.

Guests step up to the entrance plaza, glance into a sleek camera, and within seconds the system recognizes them, validates admission and opens the way forward. No digging for passes. No waiting for scanners to catch up. Just effortless entry into a world designed to move as seamlessly as it entertains.

“It’s important to be aware of what your guests expect,” said John Sprouls, chief administrative officer for Universal Orlando Resort. “Our guests expect us to create a seamless process as much as possible. Photo validation, or facial recognition, is part of that. It’s not a requirement, but it does help.” 

Epic Universe’s “photo validation” system, Universal’s term for its in-park facial recognition network, serves as the digital backbone for nearly every part of a guest’s journey. It verifies tickets at the front gate, grants Universal Express access at select attractions and unlocks storage lockers throughout the park and in several ride queues. It is the first time Universal has linked these experiences through a single facial identity profile, establishing a model that may influence how modern parks manage flow, security and convenience for years to come.

Universal executives have long promised that Epic Universe would raise the technological bar. “Technologically, it’s the most advanced park we’ve ever done,” said Mark Woodbury, chairman and CEO of Universal Destinations & Experiences. “The full guest journey is really being taken to a whole new level, and Epic is the driver of that. It will be managed through facial recognition and photo validation technology that will enable you to have a truly frictionless experience.” 

For guests, that frictionless experience begins before they ever reach the turnstiles. Through the Universal Orlando app, visitors can complete mobile enrollment in advance, linking their tickets and Express Passes to a single biometric identity. Once inside, the cameras at attraction entrances and locker stations quietly confirm who they are, and they are on their way. Guests who prefer not to participate can opt out at any time, presenting a photo ID instead.

While the system is designed and managed by Universal’s technology teams, a key partner behind the scenes is Minnesota-based Smarte Carte, a company that has quietly shaped the way the amusement and attractions industry thinks about convenience. Founded in 1970 by inventor Jim Muellner in a St. Paul garage, Smarte Carte began by creating the world’s first self-serve luggage cart system for airports. Over the next five decades, it evolved into a global supplier of electronic lockers, strollers and mobility solutions for parks, zoos and waterparks across six continents.

Its relationship with Universal Parks & Resorts spans more than 25 years, beginning with the launch of Islands of Adventure in 1999. That collaboration led to the industry’s first dual-sided ride lockers introduced with VelociCoaster and now to the facial-recognition-equipped smart lockers at Epic Universe.

Jonathan Graham, Smarte Carte’s director of business development for the entertainment division, said Universal’s culture of innovation has always challenged his team to think bigger. “Universal has consistently encouraged us to push boundaries and deliver visionary solutions,” Graham said. “Innovation is at the core of Smarte Carte’s culture, and we’ve been privileged to partner with them on technologies that redefine the guest experience, from dual-sided lockers to fingerprint biometrics and now photo validation.”

The company’s Smarte Locke software platform powers the system. According to Smarte Carte’s materials, the networked lockers support multiple access modes including barcode, RFID, PIN or photo validation, and allow real-time monitoring and management by park staff. Dual-sided configurations, now standard in Epic Universe’s in-queue installations on three attractions, separate the rental and retrieval process to reduce congestion and improve ride throughput.

“We piloted photo validation at Tropic Falls at OWA in 2024 before launching it at Epic Universe,” Graham said. “It’s been rewarding to see guests embrace a technology that enhances their day rather than complicates it.”

For Universal, those efficiencies matter. Epic Universe is expected to host tens of thousands of guests per day across its five themed worlds, and saving even a few seconds per transaction translates into smoother crowd movement throughout the park. Jeff Polk, general manager and executive vice president for Epic Universe, said that kind of optimization is by design. “We’re really focused on how we can take friction out of the guest experience,” Polk said. “As guests plan, arrive and explore, the technology disappears into the background so they can just enjoy themselves.” 

Guests have noticed. One early visitor posted online, “I was so impressed with how it worked all day. I’ve never had a smoother locker experience.” Another described the integration of facial ID across the park as “genius” and “a glimpse of the future.”

That might be exactly what Universal intended. In a park filled with elaborate attractions, the most revolutionary experience may be the invisible one. Facial recognition has quietly transformed one of the most tedious aspects of theme park navigation into one of the easiest.

As the sun sets and guests head for the exit, the same invisible system that welcomed them now ushers them out, closing the loop on a completely digital journey. In that sense, Universal’s promise of a frictionless park has become reality.

Founder of Spring Valley Beach water park passes away at 86

BLOUNTSVILLE, Ala. — Allen Travis Gilliland Sr., 86, of Blountsville, Alabama, passed away September 7, 2025, surrounded by his family. Affectionately called "Big Al" by family and friends, he was known for his giving and friendly nature.

He was born April 26, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky, to Ida Magdalena Nord. After graduating in 1958 from Mobile County High School in Grand Bay, Alabama, he served two years in the United States Army. He married Belva Jean Stover on March 17, 1962, and they were married until her death in 2023.

After a job with International Paper Company, he became owner of the full-service Shell Station at Tillman's Corner near Mobile, Alabama. In 1972, he and Jean took a leap of faith and moved their family to north Alabama after purchasing Burgess Lake, a sandy-bottomed, spring-fed swimming pool in Blountsville. He had a vision to improve this facility, and in addition to converting it to a chlorine pool, he built its first water slide in 1980. Under his leadership and hard work, Spring Valley Beach was transformed from its humble beginnings to a popular water park in the Southeastern U.S. In recent years he formed a partnership with family to manage day-to-day operations.

Although he enjoyed a retirement of sorts, you could still find him cleaning barbecue grills to make sure they were ready for the next park visitors. This willingness to do even the smallest of tasks was a hallmark of his work ethic. In addition to the water park, he owned and operated Gilliland Manufacturing Company for many years and sold wood products to stores nationwide.

Former family fun center owner Joseph J. Pandolfo passes away

East Stroudsburg, Pa. — Joseph John Pandolfo, 70, passed away on September 16, 2025.

Born in Jersey City, N.J. to his late parents Francis and Margaret (San Filippo) Pandolfo, Joe came into this world with a personality larger than life. He had unbounding energy, ambition and passion as well as being known for his jokes, pranks and constant teasing.

In 1980, he married the love of his life, relocated to Rutherford, New Jersey, and began his career as a union plumber. Pandolfo was also a proud volunteer fireman in Rutherford for 12 years with Engine Company #4.

In 1993, his entrepreneurial spirit led him to Shawnee, Pennsylvania where he put his heart and soul into starting his own business. His hard work and determination helped him fulfill a childhood dream of opening a family fun center. He owned and operated Pocono Go Karts and Play Park for 26 years. During this time, he touched the lives of many of his young employees and set an example by his long hours, hard work and dedication. They will never forget his kindness guidance, generosity and pranks.

Pandolfo was a born teacher. He was an instructor of Amusement Ride Safety for the National Association of Amusement Ride Safety Officials as well as a certified trades instructor at his local vocational school. After retiring from his amusement business, Pandolfo went on to become a consultant/expert witness in amusement ride safety.

Holland Fiberglass, an affiliate of the Ralph S. Alberts Company, Inc., announced the hiring of Samuel Mailender as the company’s new Vice President of Operations.

With more than 20 years of experience in operations, engineering and project leadership, Mailender joins Holland Fiberglass after a successful career at Universal Orlando Resort, where he served in several senior supervisory roles, including Water Quality Manager. His background spans technical management, safety oversight, ride commissioning, fabrication and cross-functional team leadership.

“We’re excited to welcome Sam to the team,” said Seth Alberts, president and CEO. “I’ve known Sam for quite some time, and I’ve always been impressed with his solution-based approach and outstanding performance history. In his new role, Mailender will lead operational strategy, manage production systems and drive continuous improvement initiatives across all departments.

The IAFE Nominating Committee has completed its interviews, and Chair Jo Reynolds of Iowa's Warren County Fair announced that the Ohio State Fair's Alicia Shoults has accepted the nomination for IAFE 2nd vice chair.

“[Alicia's] vision, dedication and natural ability to lead and inspire others make this role a perfect match,” said Reynolds. “[She has] always had a gift for bringing people together, and those who know [her] see the passion and integrity [she] brings to everything.”

Dutch Wonderland Inn — rethemed hotel — opening March 2026

LANCASTER, Penn. — Dutch Wonderland theme park will open the 2026 season with a newly rethemed hotel for families that want to make the most of their visit to the park. Along with the new theming and amenities, the hotel, located just steps away from the park, also will sport a new name, the Dutch Wonderland Inn.

Officials want the inn to offer a place where families can sit back, relax and enjoy their evenings after a full day of fun at the theme park.

“The team at Dutch Wonderland wanted to extend the park offerings and brand to create a unique overnight experience that allows families to extend their Dutch Wonderful day into the night,” said Lynsey Winters, communications director.

The hotel opened as the Cartoon Network Hotel in January 2020. That contract with Cartoon Network, owned by Warner Bros., wasn’t extended.

When announcing plans for the newly themed hotel, park General Manager Megan Hartman said park officials wanted to focus on the magic of the park and bring it to life while also providing overnight accommodations.

“The newly renovated Dutch Wonderland Inn brings pieces of our beloved park, Pennsylvania Dutch Country and the characters our visitors know and love together to create a unique experience for families looking to extend their visit to the Lancaster region,” Hartman said.

The Dutch Wonderland Hotel will offer 155 rooms and four suites with a variety of amenities.

Guests will be able to play in sprinklers at the splashpad or enjoy a swim in a zero-entry pool. A heated indoor, year-round pool will also be available. The poolside concession stand will offer a menu filled with summer favorites. Guests will be able to choose menu items from savory sandwiches, filling salads, ice cream, snacks and refreshing beverages. 

There will also be a themed dining restaurant offering a breakfast buffet, lunch and dinner.

For additional fun, the Wondercade arcade will be a place where guests will be able to enjoy games, redeem tickets and win awesome prizes. The Wondercade will be located next to the lobby.

Throughout their stay, guests will be able to find their favorite Dutch Wonderland characters like Duke the Dragon and Princess Brooke stopping by for visits.

"All Dutch Wonderland characters will be seen at the hotel,” Winters said. “They will rotate. We don’t have an exact schedule worked out just yet.”

As far as special events at the hotel, Winters said, “I’m sure we will have some planned."

The Dutch Wonderland Inn will open with the Dutch Wonderland theme park in March of 2026 and will be accepting reservations soon. Families will be able to book Stay and Play rates online starting at just $199 per night. Stay and Play packages include overnight room accommodations and up to three single-day tickets to the park.

Park officials are allowing those who want to book one last stay at the Cartoon Network Hotel can make reservations online now through January 1, 2026.

Dutch Wonderland is owned by Palace Entertainment and the park features more than 35 rides, attractions and shows.

Palace Entertainment owns and operates 12 amusement parks, water parks and family entertainment centers in the U.S. It was purchased by Herschend Entertainment last March.

Hotel accommodations offer a variety of options.

The Royal Suites will be located in the Inn’s main building, near amenities including the arcade, gift shop, café and restaurant. Suite options include a king bed, dual bunk beds and the ability to sleep up to six people. Also included are two separate bathrooms with a shower, a kitchenette with microwave, refrigerator, a family dining area, a spacious living space with a 75-inch television, individual televisions for each bunk, WiFi and more.

Another suite option includes two double beds and dual twin bunk beds; it can accommodate eight people. The room options come in all shapes and sizes, including two double beds, king beds, queen beds, bunk beds and a combination of different bed sizes. The maximum occupancy for the rooms is two to four guests.

Motor sports, family memories are what ground Ramey's path

PIGEON FORGE, Tenn. — Unlike many people in the amusement park industry, Wes Ramey did not believe his professional road would one day lead him to the front turnstile. “I’ve been going to Dollywood for as long as I can remember,” Ramey shared. “I visited with my grandparents, my parents and even in college, our friend group spent many weekends at the park. It was my hometown park then, and it remains my hometown park today.”

Today, Ramey is the public relations director at the Dollywood Company and credits his unique journey to understanding early on that following your passion will not steer you wrong.

“I originally believed I would become an eye doctor,” Ramey reflected. “I have poor eyesight, and I wanted to help others who also struggled.”

However, it was during a summer camp experience that he realized he would “look” elsewhere. “On the last day of a health career camp, during the gross anatomy lesson, we were paired with another camper, given a body part, and told we had to present about it to the other students. I realized a career in medicine might not be for me.”

The experience was not all for nought, though; his partner was excited to show the body and let Ramey talk about it. “She told me she was afraid of public speaking, and I wrote the report and gave the presentation. It was an early step in helping me recognize what I could do.”

Ramey says along with his family and Dollywood, his love of motor sports drives deep. “I knew I enjoyed writing, speaking, and telling stories to my classmates, and I began to think about finding a career that combined those skills with motor sports. As he searched for ideas, he also began to learn more about public relations.

While attending Carson Newman College, Ramey also sought and accepted several internship opportunities.

“The people you meet and the work during an internship prepare you for your next step in so many ways,” he said. “Each internship connected me and prepared me for my next experience.

“My first internship was event and expo planning for the local newspaper,” Ramey continued. “I served as the point person to help create community events, including a boat expo and a wedding expo. I learned so much.” Subsequent internships gave Ramey the opportunity to write public releases, take part in media interviews and more. “I did land my dream internship — NASCAR — and spent a summer in Daytona. I took part in events and wrote stories for NASCAR’s website.” When he returned home, he pursued a Master’s degree in Professional Communications and Motor Sports Operations. “Such a unique course curriculum!”

Ramey kept his professional goal of working for Bristol Motor Speedway on the map and earned his first professional role in public relations.

“All of my internship experiences had built upon each other,” he said. “I did not know it at the time, but as I went through each role, I was also auditioning and interviewing for the next opportunity. I tell students and other young professionals to always Intern, ask questions, shadow, and do whatever they have to do. It will open doors and also help reinforce if you are heading in the direction that you really want to go.”

Along with the early lessons Ramey learned throughout his internships, he remembers an early lesson shared by an early mentor during an event. “I had put together a racing event that I really believed in, but the weather and a few other factors worked against me, so it was poorly attended. At some point, Jeff Byrd, who was the general manager and president at the time, found me as I was taking photos. I was convinced he was going to point out everything I had done wrong. Instead, he brought a Flat Stanley student project and asked me to take pictures of it with the cars. Then he started talking to me. He said that for all of the ideas and events he had thought up, many did not land. And not to get down, and most importantly, not to stop, because the ideas that do work will make it all worthwhile. He then said he was proud of the work I put into it. It was permission to fail and inspiration to keep going.”

His successful work ethic and reputation led to other potential opportunities within racing. “It was mixed,” Ramey said. “I thought I always wanted to work with a race team, but it would have been almost nonstop weekend travel.”

Timing is everything, though, and during a weekend visit to Dollywood, he got an idea. “Everyone at the park seemed to genuinely enjoy what they were doing,” he continued. “It inspired me when I got home, and through a search online, I randomly found Pete Owens’ email and the park’s general human resources contact. I sent a cover letter and my resume, saying that if the park ever had anything in PR, I would be interested. Unbeknownst to me, they had been looking for someone in the department, and I earned the role.”

He has never looked back.

“Today I work at a theme park and make people happy. It never gets old. I enjoy the people I work with, and as cliché as it sounds, we are an extended family.”

Integrity was critical to Ramey, too, and Dollywood’s culture matched that.

“No matter where I work, I must 100% believe in that service or product. And when you’re in PR, authenticity and honesty are critical, and you must believe in what you’re saying and doing. At Dollywood, I believe in who we are and what we do.”

“Our industry means a lot to people,” he concluded. “This is a special industry and I’m proud to be a part of it.”

Industry celebrates, networks during Golden Tickets at Carowinds

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than 300 registered attendees came from around the globe. It was a weekend of fun, insight, celebration and — most important — networking. The 2025 Golden Ticket Awards took place at Carowinds on September 5 and 6.

“It was the perfect ending and celebration of a busy summer, said Brian Oerding, VP and general manager, Carowinds. “Getting the chance to share Carowinds and the new Six Flags Entertainment with everyone was a proud moment for me and my team. From the opening party to the tours, the dinner and the awards, what stood out the most was everyone’s generosity, compassion and commitment to the industry we all love so much.”

The host lodging facility — sold out by GTA attendees — was the adjacent Spring Hill Suites directly adjacent to the park. Both Friday and Saturday nights found the lobby bar area full of energy and conversation as industry professionals enjoyed one of the rare opportunities to talk and collaborate. Amusement Today dubs the weekend “The Networking Event of the Year.” Never before had it seemed so apparent.

The activities kicked into full gear on Friday evening, following an afternoon of check-in (or a day of golf for those participating in the fundraising event for the National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives (NRCMA).

The evening reception was held in the park’s Aeronautica Landing with cocktails, delicious culinary bites and live music. Also available were the rides in the area (primarily a complement from Zamperla), a couple of classics and the nearby launched roller coaster from Mack Rides, Copperhead Strike.

Networking continued for several hours, but as darkness fell, the opportunity to preview the new 20-minute haunt experience, The Conjuring – Beyond Fear, had attendees forming small groups to test their mettle against Annabelle and all things frightening. The laughs were priceless.

Old friends and new acquaintances kept things going with conversation at Spring Hill Suites.

On Saturday morning, an assortment of tours allowed attendees to gain behind-the-scenes opportunities to ask questions and gain insight from colleagues in the industry. The new rides in Camp Snoopy from Mack Rides and ART Engineering were enjoyed; a culinary food-and-beverage tour let people look and taste. Strolls through the Carolina Harbor water park or a Halloween haunt provided more to see and do.

"As a family entertainment center with a water park, it was such a valuable opportunity to go behind the scenes of the food and beverage operations at Carowinds. Every member of the Carowinds team we met during the tour was knowledgeable, welcoming and transparent, not only sharing their successes but also being open about the challenges they’ve faced along the way,” said Amanda Boyer, director of marketing, The Funplex. “I left feeling inspired and energized, with plenty of ideas to bring back to our own operations. Looking forward to exploring new ways to apply what we learned from this experience!"

The rest of Saturday afternoon was free for attendees to look at the fall décor, landscaping or attractions available. For those wanting to hop aboard and take a ride, the event credential gave them access to the park’s Fast Lane program.

Then Mother Nature took the stage. The majority of the attendees headed back to the hotel to freshen up and don their attire for the evening, and just as they returned, the skies opened up. Many made it to Harmony Hall dry; others had, well, a memorable experience.

The forecast was iffy, and the Carowinds team had to make the call around noon to move the dinner indoors. While a planned evening around the carousel plaza would have been lovely, the park made the right decision. Even more notable was not that only did Carowinds pivot quickly but the staging of the meal and venue inside Harmony Hall was wonderfully done. Every attendee was impressed.

Soon, the big event arrived, the awards ceremony itself. Gathering inside the Carowinds Theater, attendees were all smiles once the lights went dark. An opening number from park performers set the stage, and the awards followed.

In all, Amusement Today presented 27 awards in a wide range of categories, the majority of which were the results of an extensive tabulation of responses from experienced enthusiasts, journalists and industry professionals. In addition, AIMS International gave two awards of its own: the 2025 AIMS International Safety Award and the 2025 AIMS International Lifetime Contribution Award.

“AIMS International and Amusement Today have a long history of collaboration dating back to Gary [Slade’s] time on the AIMS board. We’re grateful for Gary and Amusement Today’s continued support and their shared commitment to amusement safety,” stated AIMS Board President Pat Hoffman. “The Golden Ticket Awards are a great fit because while they celebrate the best of the best in the industry, AIMS is proud to recognize the best of the best in safety — it’s a meaningful combination.”

Of note, the day prior to the Golden Ticket Awards check-in, both AIMS and the NRCMA boards find it an ideal opportunity to meet.

“It’s more than just the awards, it’s the conversations, the shared stories, and the chance to connect with others who really understand the industry,” Hoffman added. “This event gives leaders a space to meet, share ideas and make decisions that help move the entire industry forward.”

Presenters from the industry, along with AT team members, brought humor and energy to the program.

“It was an honor presenting at the Golden Tickets,” said Trever Dyer, marketing, S&S Worldwide and first-time presenter. “It felt much more connected to the industry at what is quickly becoming one of the premier industry events.”

Those accepting the awards brought their own messages of humor, inspiration and heartfelt appreciation. Cheers from the audience only emphasized the accomplishments.

With surprises, upsets and winning streaks to keep the trophies moving forward, everyone agreed following the ceremony that it was a memorable evening. (All winners are listed in the September II/Golden Ticket issue of Amusement Today.)

Universal Studios Florida had its strongest year ever, taking home five Golden Tickets.

“Thanks for the recognition, of course, but more important, thanks for the opportunity to enjoy the camaraderie and interaction with so many talented people from across our industry!” Jeff Polk, executive vice president and general manager, Universal Epic Universe told AT.

And that interaction continued, whether it was with a cocktail in hand, a ride on the award-winning Fury 325 or late-night laughs and conversation at the hotel bar.

One attendee commented to AT staff that what she appreciated most was the intimacy of the event. The close connections do indeed make the networking event one of a kind.

PLAINVIEW, Texas — The National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives (NRCMA) announced that more than $5,000 was raised at its annual Golden Ticket Awards Golf Tournament. These funds will go towards the purchase of the museum’s electrical system, the next major project as the facility’s construction pushes forward.

Thanks to sponsorships from: Baynum Solutions, Zamperla, Park Paradise, Whiting Turner, Get it Done Marketing, Vivaticket, Whitewater West, Maclan, Great Coasters International and Amusement Today — as well as the support of 36 golfers from around the world — the annual affair helped to further the museum’s mission of amusement history preservation.

“This event has quickly established itself as one of the highlights on the attraction industry’s social calendar,” said Baynum’s Melissa Bamford, volunteer coordinator of the annual tournament. “It is a fantastic way to support an incredible cause that is near and dear to all of us: our own history.”

The annual golf tournament will reconvene next year in Austin, as the Golden Ticket Awards visit both Kalahari Resort and COTALand.

Iconic coaster car arrives at its new home in West Texas

PLAINVIEW, Texas — The National Roller Coaster Museum and Archives (NRCMA), the world’s largest collection of historic amusement ride vehicles, is thrilled to announce that a lead car from Kingda Ka has arrived safely from Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey to its new home in West Texas.

“Kingda Ka has been an icon of thrills and innovation for nearly two decades, and its impact on the roller coaster world is undeniable,” said Ryan Eldredge, public relations manager at Six Flags Great Adventure. “Donating this legendary train to the National Roller Coaster Museum ensures that its legacy will be preserved for future generations of enthusiasts and historians. While we’re excited for what’s next at Great Adventure, we’re proud to know that Kingda Ka will continue to inspire as a piece of amusement history.”

The vehicle was preserved thanks to the generosity of Six Flags, funded by a fan-based fundraising campaign and transported by a group of attraction-industry creators, who documented the journey on their channels: Coliwood Studios, Upstop Media and Zooder Loopers.

In addition to Kingda Ka, ride vehicles donated by Six Flags Over Texas (La Vibora), Carowinds (Nighthawk) and Canada’s Wonderland (Time Warp) now call the museum home, after also being funded through the recent, fan-based fundraiser campaign.

Additional museum preview events are currently being planned around construction.

Sansei Technologies's Har Kupers honored with ASTM’s 2025 Cavanaugh Award

W. CONSHOHOCKEN, Pa. — Har Kupers, corporate executive officer with Sansei Technologies Inc. (and chairman of Vekoma Rides and S&S), was awarded the William T. Cavanaugh Award at ASTM International’s April 2025 Board meeting. Kupers received the award at October 17, 2025's F24 meeting in Scottsdale, Arizona on Friday, October 17. The Cavanaugh Memorial Award honors W.T. Cavanaugh, CEO of ASTM International from 1970 to 1985. Cavanaugh established ASTM International as the world leader in developing and disseminating voluntary standards. Kupers had extensive experience in structural engineering when he joined the industry through Vekoma. A devoted technical contributor and advocate for standards internationally, he has long served as a liaison between organizations like ASTM, CEN, and ISO. One of his key technical achievements was the harmonization of acceleration testing requirements and limits between EN 13814, ASTM F2291, and ISO, which he helps maintain to this day.

Pennsylvania amusement ride safety advisory board holds regular meeting

HARRISBURG, Pa. — Representatives from the amusement industry, along with community volunteers selected at large, met at the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture headquarters in mid-September for the quarterly meeting of the Pennsylvania Ride Safety Advisory Board. Feedback from this body helps the Bureau of Ride & Measurement Standards determine its course of action on each piece of equipment in the ride approval process. Chris Davis, acting chairperson, ran the meeting.

There are two new additions to the advisory board. Allen Bartlebaugh, Bartlebaugh Amusements, Inc., is another representative for the Pennsylvania State Showman’s Association (PSSA). Gary Chubb, GC Consulting, is serving as a special advisor. Also, Joe Filoramo, who was supervisor of the amusement ride safety program for over three decades, retired between the quarterly meetings. In early September, Randall Arndt, who has served as a quality assurance inspector for 14 years, was named to fill Filoramo’s position.

Ten ride/equipment approvals from six manufacturers came before the advisory board. Eight were approved, while two were tabled until additional information/compliance is obtained. (All locations are in Pennsylvania.)

Bear Creek Mountain Resort, Longswamp Township (Lehigh Valley), had three all-accessible attractions approved after some discussion regarding wheelchair accessibility. They were a climbing tower, a high-course ropes challenge and a low challenge course. Corporate Challenge Inc., dba Adventure Mas, is the Wimberly, Texas, company that installed the attractions. These are their first installations in Pennsylvania. They have had these in place at Morgan’s Wonderland in San Antonio the past five years.

Giant Inflatable Systems LLC had three inflatable bounce attractions that were used by FunBox Holdings LLC outdoors as a temporary attraction at King of Prussia Mall during the late summer. This included a 24,000-square-foot main park, an obstacle park and a toddler park. All were approved. The company mostly operates indoor facilities in nine states and six locations throughout Spain.

I-Depot-Play sold their extreme playground to Hoopla’s Xtreme Family Fun, Shamokin Dam. It is an indoor soft play attraction that was installed by Peak Thrills Engineering Inc.

Powers Great American Midways owns an X-Drive manufactured by Netherlands company KMG. It had tentative approval for use at the Big Butler Fair and Great Allentown Fair this past summer. The board tabled the approval until additional documents are received. This is the first one of its kind to operate in Pennsylvania. Drew Expositions owns the first one in the United States.

Levent Lunapark’s 22-meter trailer model Ferris wheel is owned by Powers & Thomas Midway Entertainment. It was approved. This was the first time this ride has been operating in the state. It was in operation at the Big Butler Fair.

Port Farms, Waterford (Lake Erie region), recently took possession of a Mini Digger coin op (or start button) attraction for young children, 42 inches or 5+ in age. Manufactured by Janing Micro Packed Amusement Equipment Company, LTD, a Chinese business, the mini earth mover does not move, only rotates in position. There were concerns about fencing for the excavator and controls, as the shut-off window is not in reach of the operator. This approval was tabled until compliance with ASTM standards is met.

The next quarterly ride safety advisory board meeting is December 2, 2025.

Understanding the industry is critical to any successful partnership, and that often means recognizing clients must balance financial goals with guest experience goals. Locker use and associated fees can be a hot button for guests and operators. Locker placement, requirement of use and cost to the guest can at first glance be viewed as a guest detractor versus satisfier.
