DEL MAR, Calif. – The San Diego County fair wrapped up the 24-day event with an all-time attendance record of 1,517,508 guests who enjoyed the “Out of This World” theme, attractions, shows, exhibits, food and rides. The previous attendance record 1,412,113 was set in 2011.

The largest one-day attendance during the 2012 San Diego County Fair was 92,407 on Wednesday July 4, the fifth highest crowd in the fair’s history. The largest single-day attendance ever was 101,867 on Friday, July 3, 1998.

“We want to thank everyone in San Diego for all of their support and for coming to the 2012 San Diego County Fair because this is their Fair,” said Tim Fennell, CEO and General Manager of the Del Mar Fairgrounds. “We are pleased we broke our all-time attendance record once again, making fair history during a still-sluggish economy. “Because of these challenging times, we were proud to present a venue that provided a great value for our guests,” he continued. “The fair is really about the people and teamwork that run this event year after year.”

Fun Zone, the fair’s midway, included about 40 rides while Kiddieland had about the same number. Both areas also had about 40 games of skill each as well.

Top ride this year was Ray Cammack Shows’ Grand Carousel, which was manufactured by Carousel Holland. S.J.S. Entertainment’s Reverchon Crazy Mouse came in second this year.

The July 4 fireworks show was designed and presented by Fireworks America, Lakeside, Calif. The 20-minute show consisted of 1,005 total aerial shells.

Some preliminary food numbers showed that: 60,000 Deep Fried Oreos were sold; 20,000 Deep Fried Pineapple Rings sold; 15,000 Deep Fried Peanut Butter and Jelly; 10,000 Deep Fried Cereal Bars; and 180,000 Belly Buster Burgers.

Final revenue and numbers were to be available sometime mid-July. Look for a complete wrap-up in AT’s August issue.
