Universal Studios Orlando closing Jaws attraction

By | December 6, 2011

Officials at Universal Studios Orlando confirmed on Dec. 2 that Jaws, the park’s classic ride in which boats full of guests are ‘attacked’ by a great white shark, is closing forever. Guests wishing to take one more trip aboard Captain Jake’s Amity Boat Tours have until Jan. 2, 2012. After that, the iconic theme park ride will be shut down to make way for an as-yet-unamed new attraction.

The Jaws ride was one of inaugural attractions at Universal when it opened in 1990, and one of only three that remain. Jaws is based on the 1975 film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg. Other film-based attractions that are now gone include King Kong, Ghostbusters and Earthquake. Park officials have promised the 20-year old ride will not be forgotten and have a couple things planned to ensure it will remembered and honored.

As to its replacement, Universal has not revealed any plans, stating only that the attraction taking its place will be a “new, innovative & amazing experience.”
